The Joy of being Bilingual

For those of you who might not know I’m Mexican American. I’m also the child of an immigrant. That being said like most kids at one point of my life I didn’t want to embrace my culture.

Now that I’ve gotten older I’ve gotten better at embracing it. For the longest time, I only spoke Spanish when I was forced too. Mainly when I was around non-English speaking relatives. My Spanish was never great. I can’t roll my R’s to save my life but i still try.I never realized how much being Bilingual has helped me in life. It’s helped expand my mind in many ways. It’s also odd when I find myself thinking in Spanish. I also have the ability to help those who may not have strong English speaking skills.

Now that my local community has a larger Hispanic population I find myself hearing the best conversations. I don’t mean to eavesdrop I just happen to encounter people who are on their phones sharing a good story or the latest gossip. There have been times where I want to stop and say
“Perdón señora comienzo al principio.” (“Excuse me lady will you start at the beginning.”) It never ceases to amaze me the things I hear when i go shopping. I know i shouldn’t be a Chismosa (gossip) or nosey for that matter but sometimes the story is so good I can’t help but listen. I’ve heard ladies chat about family problems to people finally separating.

I’ve finally come to accept being Bilingual as a great part of my life. After running from my heritage for so long it’s finally caught up with me. There’s nothing like have people turn to you and ask you questions in Spanish. You either answer or just smile and nod. I’ve finally opted for the first one. I’ve learned a great deal over the years as well.

I think no matter what your second (or first) language is you should embrace it. Yes, there might be setbacks and other blunders but why not try. All it can do is help expand your horizon.
