A possible new scam is hitting Youtube comments

Last week I was watching a video update from Creator Insiders (YouTube creator’s info channel). So I left a comment. Well, a few hours later I had a comment from someone suggesting I DM them on Telegraph.

I don’t use the Telegraph app. For those of you who don’t know what Telegraph is it’s a messaging app. So basically it’s a messaging app you can use to chat with others. You can read more about it from the google play store.

The reply

I had replied to a comment in the Youtube comment sections for the YouTube Creators Insiders channel. Well, a little while later I had a notice from Youtube telling me to DM them via Telegraph.

Well here’s the catch the original post had used the Youtube channels channel icon and a different Telegraph screen name.

When I checked a day later the channel had changed its icon and the Telegraph screen name. Currently, it is @ikeeptaco.

Here’s a screenshot of the reply.

Is this a scam?

I would say it could be. Since I don’t use Telegraph I didn’t see a point in contacting this random person. Also when I noticed the comment had changed as well I figured it was a scam or spam. This request was posted to several comments in the thread.

I also found it funny that the original comment request had changed as well. It went from using the channel icon and stating:

thanks for commenting DM us at the Telegraph above.

Then suddenly it changed to the current icon which is a lizard wearing a hat and the comment states: Thanks for watching and commenting. Quickly contact the telegraph above.

how is this a scam?

I would say if someone does contact the Telegraph screen name using the app maybe they will try to request money or financial information, a Youtube login, or try to sell you something. These are all guesses since I didn’t give it much thought.

I found a few threads on Reddit mentioning similar comment scams similar to this one.

What you can do

You can report the comment as spam by doing the following steps:

Click the three dots next to the comment. Then click report.

After clicking report a list will appear.

YouTube report reply list.

You can click on the unwanted commercial content or spam button (the first one on the list).

Then click report.

You can also report the Youtube channel as well by visiting the channel and clicking the About tab. On the right side of the page, there is a stats list and at the bottom, there is a flag icon (similar to this one 🏳️).

You can click the flag (🏳️) and click report. A new list will pop up and you can click report user. Then at the bottom of the next list, you can click on spam and scam.

Once that’s done if you are the person in charge of the YouTube channel you can also block the user using the same flag (🏳️) icon.

Don’t contact the commenter

I would say the safest thing to do is to just report these comments as spam. That way you don’t have to worry about being scammed. If you are the owner of the Youtube channel being spammed by these comments block the users.
