Today I thought I’d share a VS post. This means I’ll compare two products. This can help you figure out which product may be the right one for you.

What’s a TubShroom?

If you haven’t heard about TubShroom they offer products that help collect hair in your drain. This is great because it cuts down on clogs. I like that it still allows water to drain but helps catch any hair as well. This is a plus if you live in an older home because it cuts down on having to contact a plumber.

The TubShroom is sold in different styles and finishes.

TubShroom (Traditional version)

The TubShroom comes in a variety of colors and finishes. I shared about one back in 2020. I had the Chrome-topped version.

This is a solid piece of flexible material with a chrome topper. The product fits standard drains (US). It can fit a 1.5-tub drain or a 1.5-bathroom sink drain.

depending on the depth of your drain this will stick out a bit. Nothing too unsightly but I should still mention it.

How well did it work?

For me, the Chome TubShroom fits well in my drain.

It did a good job of collecting hair. I used it up until a few weeks ago.

I upgraded to a newer TubShroom product (I’ll share more in the next section.)

I liked that the TubShroom can be rinsed and air-dried before replacing.

Tubshroom Ultra edition

I recently purchased the Ultra stainless steel edition of the TubShroom. This one is very impressive. I liked that it has a sleeker low profile design.

This TubShroom does the same as the Traditional one but it has some key differences.

Key features

The overall design is more sleek and compact. It also has a removable adapter base ring. This can be used to fit several drain sizes. It includes 1.5 (attached) 1.25, 1.75, and 2-inch adaptor rings.

I found that the 1.5 inch ring that is attached to the TubShroom fit my drain well. I like that the rings are easy to remove or change. All you need to do is tug at the side and pull downward.

how well did it work?

I found that the product worked well or even better than the Traditional version. This may be due to my drain and the Ultra TubShroom design.

Boy did it collect hair. This was after a few days of use this week.

I liked that the Ultra TubShroom collected my hair yet it’s easy to remove. You don’t have to cut it off. All you have to do is tug at it downward or outward and it comes loose.

All clean

The Ultra TubShroom is easy to clean. Like it’s traditional counter part you can rinse it clean.

Which is better?

This may be hard to determine since both TubShrooms do a great job at collecting hair and keeping my drain clog-free. But here are some key features that may help you decide on which one is for you.

Let’s compare the design

The Traditional TubShroom is one piece yet the shape may appeal to some users versus others.

Side view

The TubShroom Ultra edition is a bit more streamlined. It has a mushroom-style top which allows water to flow better. While the Traditional TubShroom is a bit bulkier with a flat top.

The materials vary as well. the Ultra Edition is stainless steel while the TubShroom is a flexible plastic with a chrome top.

The bases differ

The bases differ greatly as well. The Ultra Edition Tubshroom offers a removable ring adapter. Which can be changed to fit the tub drain.

While the Traditional TubShroom is just a flared base that can fit one drain size.

Water flow

Both TubShrooms may inhibit water flow if they have hair buildup. However, I noticed that with the Traditional TubShroom over the years of use water flow may be slower due to it can start to conform to the drain. This just might be my user experience.

So far I’ve only had the Ultra Edition TubShroom for nearly a month but I haven’t noticed any major drainage issues except when it’s collected a lot of hair and needs to be cleaned.

I noticed the Ultra Edition TubShroom sits lower in the drain compared to the Traditional TubShroom.

The Ultra Editon design may also allow more water to flow down the drain compared to the Traditional TubShroom. This may vary by your bathtub drain.

Both products are effective

Both the Traditional and Ultra Edition of the TubShroom do a good job of collecting hair. Depending on how long your hair is you may clean it daily or after every few days. Since I have longer hair I check it every few days.

They are both easy to clean

Once you remove the hair you can rinse any other gunk off with water or use a mild cleanser to remove conditioner residue.

Final thoughts

In the end, you as a consumer will have to decide which product is right for you. Overall I liked both TubShroom products. But as of late, I enjoy the Ultra Edition. It’s sleeker, more compact, and looks more appealing in my drain. I also like that it has the adapter rings.

The Traditional TubShroom did a good job for 3 years. It didn’t tear or fall apart so I’ll give it credit for being sturdy. I do have some discoloration from wear and tear and greening due to copper exposure. But as a whole, both products fit my needs.

I like that I don’t have to snake my drain as often and that’s a plus when you live in an older home. It also helps cut down on plumbing issues as well.
