Every once in a while I have job offers from random accounts. This is nothing new. But I recently had a random DM on Instagram but it was to join a staffing agency.
I know many staffing agencies do hire for various businesses. But this was the first time I’d come across this DM, especially on social media.
The DM
The DM was very random. It was a group chat that was sent to several random Instagram accounts. It basically had an icon of chat agent or support agent. followed by the message.
The message
The message was the following:
Hello, I am a recruiter for Kelly Services. We are currently hiring a large number of local employees in the United States without the need for interviews. With just a smartphone or computer, you can earn $150-$650 per week, anywhere in the US – open to applicants aged 25 and above. Interested parties, please contact us via WhatsApp: https://wa.me/+16266234445
By the time I checked the message on Instagram desktop the support icon was gone so I assumed it was a scam/fake profile.
What I learned
The staffing agency that is mentioned in the DM Kelly Services is real. They have been around for nearly 80 years. They handle staffing for various industries.
They are located in the US and overseas (Europe, Asia, Australia etc.)
How is this a scam?
When you are sent a random DM not having applied for any job it’s suspicious.
No company is randomly going to DM a job offer. Let alone DM you that they are hiring/recruiting workers.
Also, the sender didn’t mention anything else about the job being offered.
The WhatsApp number also caught my attention. When I did a quick Google search I found that Kelly Services doesn’t use WhatsApp. You can contact them directly via a contact link.
Another tell tell sign it’s a scam
The fact that an agency would hire you without an interview is also another sign it’s a scam. Another big red flag is that all you needed was a smartphone or computer.
The pay is also a bit odd you can earn from $150 to $650 a week. Again what kind of unamed job has that pay range? I also found the age range to be specific as well. The job was open to people 25 and over.
It’s a common scam
When I was searching for info on this scam it’s been around for years. I know job scams are pretty common but I’d never had this one DM’d to me before.
Also with the fact that the holidays are almost hear many people might think “Hey it’s a quick way to make money for (fill in the blank)”.
All we can do is spread awareness of this scam.
