Back in March AT&T had a massive data breach. Well since then I’ve noticed an uptick in spam messages to my email account. We’ve even had a few scam mailers as well.
My mom was sent a scam letter
The scam emails are thanks for your payment from the fake Paypal, GeekSquad(Best Buy), and Antivirus brands.
Keep an eye on the mail
We had a letter from AT&T recently addressing the data breach issue. they are offering a year of Identity protection.
That’s nice of them but I don’t know if we will use it. The letter we were sent was offering a year of ID theft protection through Experian.
I was reading about the product and it has mixed reviews.
I already have ID theft protection so I don’t think I’ll sign up for it. I’ve already been alerted that my info that was associated with the AT&T account was on the dark web.
Is ID theft protection worth it?
I think this may vary from user to user. I would say it might be worth it for the year. At least you can keep track of what might pop up.
Other things you can do
If your account was one that was affected by the data breach you can update your contact info such as email address and maybe a phone number. If your account has a Passcode update that as well.
You can also update any payment info as well.
I know home addresses and name aren’t as easy to update.
You can also keep track of any new spam emails and mark them as phishing. This can be done with suspicious phone calls as well just blocking them or marking them as spam.
Report any possible fraud
This is a big one if you find any odd charges to your credit card report it right away. We don’t know how our information will be used in the future.
If you feel identity protection is needed then take part in the free service for the year. At least you can keep an eye on things that might pop up later.
