Recently I was able to select a plant-based laundry detergent. This was thanks to Try It Sampling. I was able to try a product by ECOS.
I was sent a free 64-count box of their laundry detergent sheets. They were in a clean and free scent (fragrance-free).
The product
ECOS has a variety of plant-based laundry products. These laundry detergent sheets are a novel concept. They are basically dissolvable laundry detergent in a sheet.
The sheets are free from Phthalates, Formaldehyde, dyes, and 1, 4 Dioxane. The product is also hypoallergenic, not tested on animals, and vegan. The company is women-owned.
The box is easy to open and recyclable.
Ingredients (Source Ecos product page)
Water (solvent), Polyvinyl Alcohol (polymer), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (plant-derived surfactant), Kaolin (mineral-based builder), Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside (plant-derived surfactant), Silica (mineral-based builder), Cocamidopropyl Betaine (plant-derived surfactant), Glycerin (plant-derived solvent), Sodium Citrate (plant-derived water softener), Cocamidopropylamine Oxide (plant-derived surfactant), Phenoxyethanol (preservative), Dimethicone (polymer), Saponins (plant-derived surfactant), Citric Acid (plant-derived pH adjuster), Protease Enzyme Blend (enzyme stain remover)
User experience
The laundry detergent sheets can be used in top or front(Hight efficiency) washing machines. I have a front-loader HE machine. According to the product chart, you can use one sheet for small and medium loads or two for larger loads.
The box also shows a water hardness chart and a water temp chart.
These are listed as follows:
Water Hardness | Water Temperature |
---|---|
Soft: 1 Sheet | Cold: 1 Sheet |
Medium: 1 Sheet | Warm:1 Sheet |
Hard: 2 Sheets | Hot: 1 Sheet |
How to use the detergent sheets
You can add 1 or 2 (depending on load size) sheets to the washer drum. I placed two sheets in the washer before adding my clothes.
The box noted that if you notice that the sheet or sheets didn’t dissolve well, you can add them on top of your clothing.
The laundry sheets are around 6.5 inches by 5 inches.
Do the laundry detergent sheets dissolve well?
I thought I’d show you how well the sheets dissolve in water. The sheet breaks up instantly as soon as the water hits it. It gives off a decent lather as well.
I dissolved one in my bathroom sink to show you what the results are like.
Did my clothes get clean?
Well, this was a bit of a debate. I used two laundry detergent sheets to wash a large load of laundry. When I took my clothing out of the washer they seemed clean.
I didn’t notice any fading or other color changes in my clothing. Since the laundry sheets were fragrance-free my clothes didn’t smell like anything. I placed them in the dryer and went about my day.
When I was folding my clothes I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. My clothes were soft and again seemed clean.
But when I went to change for bed I noticed that one article of clothing still had a bit of a body odor smell to it.
I just chalked this up to possible user error or that I had a larger load than two sheets can clean properly.
So I tried the products again on a small load of blankets and a sheet. Well after the initial wash I noticed that one of the blankets still had a light pet odor on it.
So did my clothing get clean?
Yes, it did to a point but I think this may vary by user and laundry load size. It may also depend on your water hardness and water temperature.
I think the concept of laundry detergent sheets is great but may not be ideal for everyone. I’ll use these for handwashing items or when I wash my painting rags.

Final thoughts and Where to buy
Final Thoughts
Overall ECOS Plant powered laundry detergent sheets are a novel concept. Do they work? Yes, but the effectiveness may vary by user and other factors such as water temperature and laundry load size.
For me, the laundry sheets did leave my clothes looking clean but I felt for a large load of laundry it didn’t the job well. I will use them for handwashing items or when I wash some of my arts and crafts rags.
The ECOS laundry detergent sheets are a good concept and can be helpful in cutting down wasteful plastic bottles or tubs. This may also be helpful for folks who use public washing machines such as a laundry room or laundry mat. It cuts down on having to lug around a bunch of laundry detergent.
These may also be good for someone who travels or does RV travel. You can tuck the box away in a cabinet and you’re done.
I liked that the sheets dissolved fully in water and didn’t leave any type of film or residue on my clothes.
I would suggest that if you feel that the box may not be suitable for keeping the laundry detergent sheets from getting dusty you can always place it in a resealable container of your choice.
