Over the weekend I had a new collab request email. The email was sent to my old Reviews and Savings Pal email address.

I still get a number of emails there asking for content creation or collaborations or even reviews. But this one was a bit different.

It claimed to be from Levi’s.

The email

The sender

The email was sent on Sunday which is usually a bit odd for collaboration requests or even content creation requests. Most brands are open Monday through Friday. When I’m set requests to collab over the weekend I usually think the sender is from outside the US.

When I looked into the email address I was right. It was sent from the following email address:

levisbrand1@daum.net

This set off a red flag because it wasn’t a branded email address so I knew it was fake right off. But being me I still contacted Levi’s just to have them confirm my suspicions.

The Email Message

The email was pretty straightforward and to the point. The sender offers you the opportunity to advertise Levi’s products on your Youtube Channel.

I don’t know if the sender was trying to spell John but I assume they were.

Email text

The odd thing is that you aren’t addressed properly no Hi Sally or John just a generic Hi there.

I contacted Levi’s

I knew this was a scam from the start but I still thought I’d contact Levi’s to let them know. Someone from their support staff replied quickly and this was their reply.

Please note I excluded the support agent’s name and any general contact info but below is the general message.

Thank you for reaching us.

Checking the information you provided we identified that the email is not coming from anyone at Levi’s.
Please disregard the email and do not provide any personal information.

What I found out about the sender

Using Whois I found out the sender was from Korea. The sender is part of a larger brand that seems to be a marketing firm. I found some info about the company over at Wikipedia.

How is this a scam?

This is a scam because the email isn’t sent directly from a branded email address.

It’s not sent from a branded email address. For instance, when I was sent the reply back from Levi’s the email address was the following:

help@levi.com

So the email address should be the brand name followed by dot com. The email listed Levis brand1 followed by the email service domain. Yet that isn’t a valid email address for Levi’s.

When in doubt reach out

When in doubt reach out to the brand and ask them if the email is valid. Many times their customer support staff will reply quickly to verify if it’s a real offer.

Do your own research

You can find out about most scams by doing a quick internet search. I found a number of Youtube videos sharing about this scam. A majority of them were targeting users from overseas.

I’m not sure if this would have been a wire fraud scam or phishing scam but it definitely was probably going to request a payment at one point. Don’t let anyone fall for this let’s get the world out.
