This morning I happened to see an interesting post on Instagram. Someone thought that it was in poor taste for a blogger to ask followers for money.
Now I don’t know the extent of the request nor do I feel it’s my place to judge that person. But that being said it got me thinking about the topic of money in the content creator world.
It’s a fine line
There always seems to be a fine line between what someone thinks is acceptable and what they find offensive.
That’s a given for any topic in an array of fields. Yet when it comes to content creation money is something that is at times taboo.
I find that funny because most folks want to make money in some way when creating content.
Either by advertising, brand deals, creating their own products, etc.
But someone you follow asks for money and it’s suddenly a no-no. I don’t get that.
If you run a website outside of a free hosting platform (like I do) you know it’s costly. Not to mention any costs you may incur when dealing with marketing your brand or products.
money request people find okay
asking for donations
Let’s be honest I think we’ve all seen donation buttons on select websites. That’s usually to help the website keep running.
This doesn’t seem to bother people. It’s an option they choose to use if they want to give the site a few bucks.
affiliate links
This is a big one all over private websites and social media. To me, this is basically the same as asking followers for money in a sense. You (the affiliate) will earn a few cents to a few dollars from each sale. Or the new customer may get a percentage off while you earn a flat amount per sale.
Now, this is something few people complain about they are happy to help a friend out or get a percentage off X brand.
having an online store
Okay, this is another common practice if you have a website. Having an online store. Your still showcasing your merch or products.
You’re also asking followers for visitors for money in a sense just in exchange for a product or service.
There’s still a fine line
It appears that most people don’t mind the ways to give folks money I shared above. Yet there’s still a fine line between someone asking followers for money and the followers opting to give it freely.
Why is that? Do they feel that the person asking isn’t genuinely in need? Or do they feel a person shouldn’t resort to asking for money from their followers?
That question I can’t answer but all I can say is if you find the practice a bother take the time to figure out why.
Feel free to share your ideas on the topic I’d love to see what you all think.
