A few days ago I had a very interesting phone call. The call was on my cellphone. As with many scams calls the call came from a spoofed phone number. It was listed as someone named Brian P. (i forgot the full last name)
The caller claimed to be calling me because I was such a loyal United Airlines customer.
the call
The call was from Brian P. As I mentioned. It was also stated to be from Vista, CA. Vista is in San Diego county.
The caller was a Filipino man. He was polite and as soon as I said hello he thanked me for being such a loyal United Airlines customer.
He then went on to tell me that United was galling to offer me a free tour of their new reservation center in Laguna Hills, CA.
He proceeded to ask me if I was familiar with the City. I told him I did but that I wasn’t interested.
The caller seemed a bit surprised when I declined. He thanked me for my time and ended the call.
You can read a similar scam via this Flytalk forum post.
Here’s the thing
I’ve never been an Untied Airlines user. Nor have I ever applied for their credit card. So I figure this is a new take on a phishing scam.
I also have a feeling if I would have said “Yes, I’d love a tour.” The caller would have asked me for my name and address. I would think maybe for a small fee of some sort as well.
What you can do
If you have a call similar to this one don’t give the caller any information. Even if you are an existing customer.
You can also always contact the company or brand that the caller claims to be from to double-check the information.
From what I found online I don’t think United has a reservations center based in Laguna Hills, CA.
Always remember if the deal sounds to good to be true it probably is.
