90’s Tv was just different

I’ve been rewatching some 90’s shows lately and realized that some shows probably wouldn’t air now.

Twin Peaks

I’ve been rewatching Twin Peaks on Paramount+ (with Showtime bundle). I’ve noticed that I don’t think Twin Peaks would be shown on network tv now. I know back in the 90’s it was a bit controversial.

One of the biggest things I don’t think would be writen in to the show now was actors trying to play a different race.

For instance having a caucasian actor trying to play an asian This is the case for one character in Twin Peaks. I know it’s a disguise and a plot twist but I still wonder if it’d air today.

Twin Peaks was a interesting show to being with but I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did on netwrok TV.

We had more diverse shows

I think the 90’s have more variety in their shows. There was a pattern of dramas or comedies but we didn’t seem to be stuck in a perpetual pattern like network TV is now.

It’s not like now that every network has a medical drama followed by a police or legal show. They were spread out amongs the networks.

The comidies were divers as wel we had shows like In Living Color, Living Single and Martin. I liked seeing people of color on TV.

Let’s not forget we also had shows like Dinosaurs and The X-Files ( my personal favorite.)

Many shows talked about current events

There were a lot of shows that tired to bring current evnets into the spotlight. Some had episoides that dealt with AIDS, Others had shows talking about race relations.

This was great because it brought current events into our living rooms. It also opened up a converstation for everyone to talk about it. Even if it didn’t affect you in your daily life.

Where has TV gone wrong?

I think so many people are opting to watch streaming services because network TV has lost it’s appeal. I know for me I’d rather stream something without a million commercials. The networks have fallen into a pattern too. If one type of shows hits big they just recycle it.

I think we are getting tired of the same medical dramas, legal shows or generic dramas. At least I am.

I’ve noticed so many shows have become pretty perdictable too. It never fails when I like a show and it’s good it gets canceled.

I also think we as a sociiety have soften over the years. I’m not saying that in a bad way but it feels like a lot of shows are produced with caution. There is worry about backlash. Or the shows go overboard on inclusivity.

It’s great that shows are having LGBTQ+ characters but sometimes i feels like the character is added to appeal to more viewers.

This is just my take on it. share your opinions in the comments below.
