Over the weekend I took some time for myself and watched a few movies. I found two that caught my attention. One was Westworld and the other was Futureworld. These movies were sort of thought-provoking in a way. Yes, they were from the 70’s so it had its campy moments I guess.
Westworld was based on the book written by Michael Crichton. If you’re not familiar with the movie think of Jurassic Park but replace the dinosaurs with robots. The movies held my attention and let me forget about my day for the most part.
Robots have always been cool
Robots have always been a great topic for Science Fiction. When I think of robots I think of a few things. I usually think of I, Robot, Do Androids Dream of electric sheep or Blade Runner. I also think of my favorite robots of R2D2 and C-3PO. Oh and Rosie from the Jetson.
Will Robots make life better?
I think that’s one of the fascinating things about robots or androids if you well. Even with Aniamatroic figures, it’s an interesting process. They are hard-wired figures that can be shaped into many forms from humans to animals. We know they aren’t real but we still enjoy them at amusement parks.
We do have robots in our homes in a way if you have a Roomba vac or a similar system. They may make life easier yet we haven’t reached the level of development for everyone to have their own robot or android in their home.
I think we can all admit we’d be happy with our own version of Rosie.
Yes, there are some advancements in robotics but still, nothing that is affordable for the everyday consumer aside from the vac systems.
Will they become better companions?
One thing I’ve noticed as a running theme in many movies and stories deal with the topic or robots or androids companionship. Will we find a better relationship with an android over our human counterparts? that one I’ve leaving up for you to decide. I often think of people who invest in the life-size dolls for companionship. But it does make you wonder will an android beat me out for a date. Ex Machina sort of touches the topic.

I think we are fascinated by the fact that we can create something that may obey us. Yeah I know that sounds sort of godlike but it’s true. It would also give us the illusion of making life better. We could have androids or robots take care of menial tasks. They wouldn’t have to have time off or get sick. So that would be a plus.
Yet again we’d have to take into account possible revolts or other issues. Robotics has always been an ideal that is slowly becoming a reality. Granted we still haven’t gotten to the point of having a full-size robot or android in our homes but we may have one someday.
Either way, robots will always be fascinating to us because the uses for them in our ever-changing world would bring a whole new dynamic to things i guess.
I for one would be happy with having a Rosie around.
Feel free to share your thoughts on the topic.
