Earlier this week I had two scam texts both were from an email address stated to be Netflix. They were sent at around 1 am or so.

These have been similar to the ones I’ve been sent in the past. They all come from what looks like random auto-generated email addresses from the brands.

The sender

The texts were sent from two email addresses they were similar and had numbers in them. The one I’m sharing here is no-reply74@netflix-id.com

the text

The text message was straightforward and had a very noticeable typo in it. So I knew it wasn’t sent by the company.

We forced to stop your account, click this link to renew:// (url) CASE #N921

Things to look out for

One big thing to look out for with these types of random texts is to check for typos. This one obviously had one. No legitimate company would send out the following sentence: We forced… It should have read We were forced to stop your account.

Another thing is the way the link is displayed it’s not a www just a half link that included the :(colon) and // (forward slashes) followed by the URL.

Another thing I thought was odd was that it wasn’t addressed to anyone. You’d think Netflix would have a template that would read dear customer or the like.

don’t click or follow links

In this case, the text message asked you to renew your account by clicking the link. The thing is you should never follow links because you don’t know where they will lead you.

Even if it takes you to what looks like a legitimate page it may be a phishing attempt to gain credit card information.

always contact the service

If you are a Netflix user always contact them first. I would assume that if your service was stopped you wouldn’t be able to access your account on any platform.

I would think Netflix would have a way to report these scam texts as well (I’m not a user so I don’t know.)

All we can do is get the word out. That way no one is scammed.
