Well, it looks like the UPS scam texts are going around again. These aren’t new but I think this is the first time I’ve ever been sent one.
They are pretty common around the holiday season but I guess they are happening all year long now.
The sender
As usual, these scam texts come from the oddest senders. This one happened to be some weird email address or website.
9xxtd9aewwzauophyngy@nawza.com
from what I could tell it’s a fake account created to send out spam texts. I couldn’t even find anything when searching Google.
I did find that nawza.com is linked to Alibaba Singapore.
The text message
The text message was pretty straightforward and urged you to click the link to confirm your zip code.
notice about your order package: UPS-#M5FBDCRM On Hold. confirm your zip code: rebrand.ly/787ae0?id=Rpe
Scam text claiming to be from UPS
Why this is a scam text
UPS does send out text messages but that’s only if you request text alerts. This is true for senders and those who sign up for UPS My Choice service.
The fact that it came from what looks like a website URL is also a dead give away that it’s fake.
Another red flag is that the shipping number is wrong. Most UPS shipments usually have a 1 followed by a Z.
This one had an M at the start.
UPS will never ask you to confirm your zip code using a shortened URL link.
What does this scam gain
I assume this scam can add malware or spyware to a phone. Or it could just be a phishing attempt to try to gain more info about you. It may start with your zip code and then ask for payment for the delayed delivery. With scams like these you never know.
