There have been many scam texts happening lately. But one of the long-lasting ones is the unemployment phishing scam.

Even though I mentioned the state of California this scam can happen in any state.

This isn’t the first time I’ve mentioned this scam you can check out our previous posts below.

The scam ploy

Like many of these phishing scams this text wants you to share your banking info. This one uses the guise of a prepaid debit card linked to Bank of America.

The scam sender

This text was sent from an out-of-state number. The area code was 681.

Edd scam text phone number. 681-238-0739.
Edd scam text phone number. 681-238-0739.

The text

The text is pretty straightforward. The sender is claiming to be EDD (Employment Development Department) California’s version of the Unemployment office.

The text reads as follows:

EDD Alert: You have a Pending $2,100 CA Deposit which is not yet posted to your Bank of America EDD Prepaid Debit Card due to the restriction on your card, Please reactive your Unemployment EDD card with the following activation link to approve the deposit and continue using your card.

Things to watch out for

The things you need to watch out for are the out-of-state phone number. I did a simple Google search for the phone number and found it was linked to West Virginia.

The link that is shared is also a bit suspicious because it has a typo. It has find with two d’s. I Googled the URL and it doesn’t exist.

Also, the biggest red flag is if you receive this text and you aren’t even on Unemployment.

The text has little punctuation and it seems like it’s almost one long sentence.

This scam may be familiar

This scam uses a lot of the popular credit card or payment services phishing techniques. It states your card is being restricted. Sound familiar to anyone else?

So basically it’s a common phishing scam.

EDD never texts you

As far as I know and read EDD (Employment Development Department) doesn’t send out text messages. They may sent out letters or Emails but never text.
