If your like me and I imagine most of us the holidays are a stressful time. From running around to do last minute shopping to trying to get the house in order for company. It’s always rushing here or there. I had time to think this over recently while I was standing in line to make a purchase.Â
I don’t mind holiday shopping I just hate and I mean hate having to stand in line. I like to say I have Can’t stand in line syndrome (I found this term in  Delivered from Distraction by Dr. Edward Hallowell) Anyways before I get off topic my A.D.D. goes haywire when i have to stand in a long line. But I’ve found some good ways to help me cope with the holiday rush
I think we’ve all seen or been that person who’s so stressed yours either on the verge of tears or about ready to hit someone. So while I waited in line i took note of all the activity around me. I managed to think of a few tips that i hope are helpful.
Buy less
I know this is a simple idea but it’s true. I think for me spending time with someone is worth a lot more than a gift. Granted if you’d still like to buy something have it be a small gift. Or make one if your more artistically inclined or a DIYer.Â
Ask for help
Let’s be realistic we all have that moment during the holidays where we feel so overwhelmed and like there aren’t enough hours in the day. This is common place these days. Remember that you can always ask for help. Even a simple request to family and friends is enough. I have people who are picky eaters in my family so I’ve asked or suggested they bring foods or drinks that they like. I don’t see any harm in that. Besides it’s one less thing you have to worry about.
Prep beforehand if possible
This is one big thing my mom has taught me over the years. Be it getting ready for Thanksgiving if we’re going to make a turkey or even going on picnics. Prepping beforehand is a great way to save time along with cutting down on stress. If you are going to make food you can cut up your veggies early. You can also make certain dips beforehand just check your recipe.Â
This also works with general items as well. If you’re having guests you can pick up items early. We’ve been stocking our pantry with paper goods as we find them. This also cuts down on having to make emergency trips to the store when unexpected company stops by.Â
Take time for yourself
During this time of year we’re always rushing around. We spend so much time trying to please others we forget about ourselves. I know this can be hard for those who have little ones or other life demands. But you can carve out a few minutes for yourself it’s great. It doesn’t matter if you have to lock yourself in the bathroom for two minutes just to breath. You need to find ways to keep self care in your routine as well.
Personally, I try to take time throughout my day to de-stress. I listen to music i like or just sit with my thoughts. Another thing that helps is meditating if you have time for that. We forget how much we give of ourselves during this time of year that we put our own needs on the back burner. Again do what works for you.
I hope some of these tips were helpful. Feel free to share some of your tips on how you survive the holidays. I’d love to read your ideas.Â
