I know this has becomeΒ a running topic for me but in a way, I find it entertaining. Random messengers or Social Media Romeo’s as I like to call them are an interesting topic. I’ve also noticed that it has picked up more now that summer is upon us. I’ve seen an uptick in random messengers but again this is nothing new. But I have come to enjoy the silly chatter. A male friend of mine likes to dub them Instaromeo’s.
I will say that the latest requests have been out of the ordinary. I had a person repeatedly ask for certain apps such as Google Hang out or What’s App. I also had a request for an iTunes gift card last week. Now that one got me. The person claimed to be in the middle east and wondered if there was a Walmart where I lived. I had to laugh about that one. It’s not like iTunes gift cards are sold exclusively at any particular store.Β I find it interesting that they automatically think you will reply with a yes.
I also had another profile profess their undying affection. Those are the ones I get the kick out of the most. The chats turn from a hello to suddenly I’ll cross an ocean to meet you. These profiles usually try to portray themselves as lonely men. I get everyone needs love but these people lay it on thick.
Usually, the story hasn’t changed much. They’re one of the following a widower, divorced or single. With or without children. I’ve also noticed an uptick in profiles trying to portrayΒ themselves as being in the military. The iTunes request profile claimed to be in the military but had selfies of someone playing golf and general images like that.
Once again my friend helps me out with that by giving me ideas of things I can ask. Not long ago I had a profile state that they again were in the middle east and that they were in the military. I, of course, asked a million questions. I figured I’d play their game. They ignored them all myΒ questions but kept telling me how cute they thought I was.
Another thing I’ve come across lately is that these Social Media Romeo’s will contact you for a few days then stop. I don’t mind it half the time it’s the same line just a different day. But when they do initiateΒ contact again they will ask the same questions. I think they hope someone will forget who they are.
Another dead giveaway to me is that most profiles are full of selfies. I’m not against selfies mind you but how many do you need to post in a day. Some profiles are also private so I don’t even bother with them. I had one person bug me to follow them back so I could see more of their photos. I didn’t even deal with that shenanigans.
You would think with all that’s happening online these people would find better things to do with their time. I often wonder how many people fall for their cheesy lines and do help them out.
I can say this much they are persistent but I get a great laugh out of it now and then.
