I know this is a running topic on my blog but honestly social media never ceases to amaze me. I’ve encountered some very strange and at times downright dumbfounding profiles in the past. If you follow my youtube channel you’ve probably seen me vlog about some of the odd things I’ve dealt with too. Here’s a blog post and here’s a video post in case your interested.
After that long winded introduction I’d like to say Yes, I know better then to chat with random people. But sometimes I’m not certain if it is a possible business opportunity. Sometimes I reply back because I’m curious to see what the profile might need. Other times I admit I reply back out of boredom. Lately however I’ve noticed a large upswing is spam social accounts. I don’t know if this is because there are more people trying to scam others out there. Who knows but I happened to look up info about trying to create a mock Instagram account for another post idea i have and let me tell you the results of that search are astounding.
Now getting back to the topic at hand for a minute. I’ve noticed that most of these profiles tend to direct message me via Instagram. Some profiles are harmless I know but others I’ve been able to catch the pattern very quickly. For instance, some of the profiles are private. Others are public but full of nothing but selfies. Many also claim to be in the military. Some have claimed to be from overseas. Which at times I don’t doubt.
One pattern I can tell you I’ve noticed very early on is that the profiles will ask you a million questions before requesting that you chat with them off of Instagram or another social site. I’ve had requests for What’s app info or Google Hangouts as well. I’ve also had a profile try to convince me that they were a famous musician. Now that one I played along with for a short time. I obviously knew they weren’t who they claimed to be. Of course I did my duty an reported the account. Now the latter mentioned account could have fooled many people who didn’t know better.
Another prominent point these accounts have as well are that they are looking for love. Going back to the fake musician for a moment the person tried to sweet talk me into believing they wanted to date me. I, of course, saw through the ploy. Many times these profiles try to use the guise of being friends before you know it they are asking if you are married or single. Things along those lines. I do find it funny when they don’t end up with the answer they like. I’ve also seen some funny virtual hissy fits. Some profiles have tried to insult me too. Those I find laughable.
I’ve even had friends call out people via social sites for sending them random photos they did not request. That gave me the idea for this post actually. Thanks, Heather for calling that person out.
