Rust-Oleum recently released a new product. Their 5-in-1 spray paints offer 5 spray patterns in one can. I loved them.

Thanks to Rust-Oleum Creator’s Studio for these complementary products and the testing opportunity.

The products

Rust-Oleum 5-in-1 spray paint is a new product. it’s sold in a variety of colors and finishes. I was selected to try the Gloss enamel finish. I was sent a red and black can of spray paint.

Unlike traditional spray paint cans, these offer a turning wheel with 5 spray patterns. The wheel also locks. The turn wheel is easy to use. The spray patterns are also numbered. You can see this example by visiting the Rust-Oleum product page.

The patterns are the following:

  1. Hight output
  2. Standard
  3. Low output
  4. Vertical fan
  5. Horizontal fan

The finishes for this spray paint are from Satin to gloss. Some colors may only have certain finishes.

The Project

I chose to spray paint some old metal plant stands. One was a basket-style stand while the other one was a flat-top stand.

The basket stand was pretty rusted and had peeling paint. The flat top stand has some rust and peeling paint but it mainly needed new paint.

You will need to clean your products before painting them. I brushed these down and removed any spider webs or excess dust.

You can try to sand off any old paint or rust if you’d like. I didn’t because I didn’t think it would help the basket stand much.

How to use the spray paint

You can shake the spray paint can a few times remember to unlock the spray pattern wheel prior to doing this. The pressure button may be a bit stiff when you first use it but it will soften up over time.

As with any spray paint you will need to cover your surface or place some cardboard down. I used a tarp and cardboard.

You will also want to use a mask and/or goggles as well as gloves. You will also want to test to see which spray pattern will fit your project best.

I used a few different spray patterns for these projects. I liked that the turning wheel is easy to use. One of the biggest things is to remember to spray away from you. Another tip is to avoid drips try to cover an area in one continuous spray.

Even though this was a gloss finish I applied two coats for each plant stand.

I let the products dry between coats. I waited a few days due to weather delays. But on average you can wait up to 24 hours between coats. Dry time will vary by your climate.

The final results

As a whole, the Rust-Oleum 5-in-1 spray paints worked great. Even if the plant stands were a bit rusted it covered the rust well. Again you can sand some of the rust off for a smoother finish.

The Red Gloss took well and helped give the basket plant stand a nice pop of color. It covered some of the rust spots well.

I used low output (1) and Standard (2) sprays. I think I also used the Horizontal fan (5).

The black plant stand took the color well and looked even. I used Standard (2) Vertical fan (4) spray patterns.

Final thoughts and where to buy

Final thoughts

The Rust-Oleum Custom Spray 5-in-1 product is great. I like the ease of use. I also love the spray patterns. These make easy work for a painting project. The Gloss colors are even and cover well. Depending on your project you may need to apply more than one coat of paint. I found that this didn’t have a lot of blowback or paint loss.

The pressure button will soften after a few uses. The can is easy to hold even when wearing gloves. I liked that the spray is even and I didn’t notice any drips.

I will definitely purchase more colors and finishes.
