Autism affects individuals differently. Some have learning disabilities, others experience over or under-sensitivity to sounds, touch, tastes, smells, light or colours. Some have difficulty interpreting your gestures, jokes or sarcasm. Many have a very literal understanding of language, and think people always mean exactly what they say.
Globally, autism is estimated to affect 22 million people. It occurs 4 to 5 times more often in boys than girls.
