I’ve had an interesting email the other day. It was an invite to join or set up a chat time with a rep from a site named Social Stance. Well, it seems they try to help people gain followers by having them join or apply to join a giveaway where a large influencer or notable account is having a giveaway.

Basically the email gives you the impression that this will be a win-win because if you’re selected to join the larger giveaway you’ll gain followers and possibly grow your email list.

Original email and text

I spammed the email because I figured it was fake. It was sent to my blog email address too.

I’m reaching out because I wanted to share this unique opportunity to grow your brand’s social media presence with one of our influencers we’re working with in March.

We’ve partnered with Sean Lowe (@SeanLoweksu) for an Instagram promotion that will launch on March 18th.

Sean will be asking his 1.2M+ followers on Instagram to follow a group of brands in order to qualify to win a prize. These brands will be participating in a “group buy” that will allow them to gain exposure and qualified, targeted followers from Seans’ audience at a fraction of the cost.

On top of new followers gained, we have a bonus entry where people enter their name and email address – and you’ll get all of the emails submitted to use for your marketing purposes.

Here are some stats from a previous campaign:

Brooke Ence campaign participants gained an average of 5,600 new qualified, targeted followers and 1,000+ emails

If you’re interested in learning more, let me know and we can set up a time to chat.

well I did some searching

I did a search for this company/site Social Stance. Well, the full name is Social Stance Media. I found two Instagram profiles both seem to be giveaway promo pages. one is listed under Social Stance and the other is Social Stance.Media. I even took a glance at their website. Their site seems to be under 6 months old and is rather flashy.

It’s pretty barebones in terms of its info. It gives you the spiel of how people have won prizes including large cash prizes as well as products. They have photos of people/profiles who have partnered with them to promote the giveaways. Most seem to be health and fitness profiles. They also have a few videos (that are required) of winners thanking Socal Stance for the prize wins.

I noticed that while scrolling Instagram that only one person out of the handful who won a cash prize thanked the brand. You’d think that if you’d won $5,000 or $10,000 giveaway you’d share that even a simple thanks for the prize winner. Granted I know some people don’t want to announce something like that but you’d still think there’d be at least a mention. The giveaways also seem to last around a week.

The red flags

When I’m sent emails like these i always notice red flags. First off if I’m not a large blogger or influencer with 10 thousand followers why would this site email me. Secondly, when I’m sent emails like these I wonder why I was sent such an email.

I also wonder at the follower count the site suggests or implies you may gain by becoming a part of these types of giveaways.

I also found one Instagram account of a stated winner that was no longer a user. So that sort of makes you wonder too.

Just beware

I just thought I’d alert you all to these types of possible scams. I won’t follow up with Social Stance because I don’t feel like i need to have people jump through hoops in hopes to gain followers.

Yes, the appeal of gaining hundreds or thousand or maybe more followers is always something exciting. But then again some people unfollow profiles after giveaways end. So you may end up back at square one.

If you’re sent an email similar to this one just beware.

You can search for the site and profiles to draw your own conclusion on if it’s a scam or not but i still thought it was worth sharing.
