Over the weekend I had an automated/self-cleaning litter box arrive.

I would like to note that I think i assembled the box incorrectly the waste tray goes to the front of the box.

Thanks to Try It Sampling and Petsafe for the complimentary ScoopFree self-cleaning litter box. The box includes the following:

  • litter box top
  • disposable litter box try with lid
  • power adapter
  • bag of crystal litter

[/su_list]

Overall the litter box is easy to set up. Since it has a disposable (cardboard) litter box all you do is add the litter that’s included in the box. You can attach the power adapter to the litter box top and put it on the tray.

The litter box has a rake that collects solid waste into a tray on the far end of the litter box. It rakes the litter 20 minutes after your cat leaves the litter box.

The crystal litter will absorb liquids.

It’s suggested that the litter box be used by kittens 6 months or older cats. Also, a great thing to do is leave the box unplugged until your cat is familiar with the box. If you have younger kittens it is advised not to plug the litter box and to clean the box manually.

I ran the rack so Dylan and Sam could see how it worked. Dylan was curious but Sam jumped back into the box to try to catch the rake. This could be an issue for some pet owners so you may want to try this test to see what your cat’s reaction will be. The rake does stop if it senses motion or your cat paws at it. The rake is a simple metal grate it doesn’t have sharp edges but it’s still good to be cautious.

The litter box is stated to hold a cat 15 Lbs or under. The box of crystal litter is stated to last a month for one cat. This may vary by user.

A few notes on the product so far

I set up the litter box on Sunday night. My kittens Dylan and Sam used it (I’ll spare you the photos.) It’s okay but like any litter box, it can be messy.

I noticed Sam wasn’t too happy that it was so shallow. Since it is a plastic-lined cardboard box you may want to place it on a plastic or litter mat to avoid any unexpected accidents.

I also noticed that it’s large. So you may want to make sure you will be placing it in an area that’s easier for you and your cat.
Size (source Amazon)

20.38 x 7.13 x 28 inches

I also noticed that when the rack cleans the box some litter ends up there even if it’s clean. Also, the litter does turn yellow for a short time after your cat pees there then it dries up. The litter didn’t seem to have a scent nor was it chunky crystal litter. It was a decent size. It sort of looked like rock salt.

Overall the boys have used the box twice so I’ll have to see if they use it again before I post a full video review.

This unit retails for around $150 USD (price may vary by model and retailer). There are a few versions this is the basic 2nd-generation unit but there is also a wifi/smart enabled litter box as well as extras such as a hooded one. The litter trays may vary by retailer as well but they can be a bit pricey.

the litter trays may vary by price due to their quantity. But here are two that I found via Amazon.

If you just wanted the litter refills here is a set of two 9lb bags.
