October is black cat awareness month. I’ve owned two black cats in the last few years. We had the late great Shadow and now we have Smokey.

I don’t get why black cats have such a stigma to them. They are like other cats they can be crazy or goofy.

They are loving

Yes, there may be that odd black cat that’s feisty but the ones I’ve had have been nothing but loving. Shadow loved cuddles and pets. Smokey does as well. Smokey likes to just hang out and watch TV to.

They are loving towards siblings. Smokey and his brother Bear are always together throughout the day. They also get along with the other cats.

They are the last to be adopted

Due to social or cultural stigmas, many black cats are the last to be adopted at shelters. That makes me sad.

The lack of adoptions means they may be euthanized more often.

Black cats weren’t always considered evil

Black cats weren’t always considered evil. Many cultures considered them lucky. Sailors used to have black cats on their ships. They believed they protected their journey.

They are very smart

Black cats can be like tuxies (black and white cats) they are very smart. They can be taught to come when they are called. Smokey knows his name and comes when we call him.

You may also be able to teach them simple tricks and to use talking buttons.

They love to play

Black cats can be very playful and benefit from stimulation throughout the day. Smokey loves his toys. He loves mice, roller toys, and catnip bags. He also loves to play with milk bottle caps. He can toss those around for hours.

Black cats aren’t novelty pets

Black cats are meant to be loved all year round not just during Spooky season. I’ve read that some animal shelters and rescues restrict black cat adoptions this time of year to make sure that they aren’t being adopted for novelty reasons. Basically, people adopt them for Spookey season only to abandon them come November.

This is a horrible thing to do. If you adopt a pet it should be for its lifetime.

Spread the word

If you’re a black cat owner of if you love black cats spread the word. The more we talk about our cats and how much we love them maybe we can make a difference and break the stigma.
