A few weeks ago I picked up a new setting powder. I’m always interested in trying new brands. So when I found an NYX Professional product at my local CVS I thought i’d give it a try.

I’d always heard good things about the brand so I thought I’d like it I purchased the loose setting powder in translucent.

product overview

The NYX Professional Makeup HD Studio Finishing Powder is used to finish or set your makeup. You can use as much or as little as you like. Some people use more to set certain areas of the face such as under the eyes or other areas of the face.

I tend to apply the product lightly since it is white it may give you what some call flashback when you take photos. Flashback is when you have a white cast on your skin that is noticeable in flash photos.

The powder is translucent but it is still white it will blend as you apply it to your face. once it settles it should disappear.

The container has a protector so the powder doesn’t spill if it falls. Okay, I just noticed the protector has a sticker over the holes. (Yeah I feel oh so bright right now.)

product application

When you want to apply the setting powder you can remove the lid and shake the setting powder into it.

I applied a bit to my wrist so you could see what it looks like on the skin. Since I had a small amount it may not have show up at all in my photo.

I had read a few ladies say the product had horrible flashback. So I took a few photos of my wrist with the setting powder on it. Again I didn’t apply a lot so it may not have shown up well in the photos.

For me, I thought the NYX Professional Makeup HD Studio Finishing Powder blended well with my foundation and didn’t seem to leave me looking ghostly.

Wear time

I felt it held up well throughout my day. I didn’t have any skin issues or notice that it caked or separated my makeup. It also didn’t seem to have any fall off either.

I liked it but there are a few cons

Overall I liked the setting powder but I felt there were a few cons. I’ll list them below

  • may look too white on darker skin tones
  • very dusty
  • can be messy
  • may have a flashback effect
  • might be difficult to control product when shaking into the lid.

I found that the powder is very dusty. So for someone who is sensitive to small particles or may have Asthma this may not be the right product for you. I also thought that when you shake the powder out you don’t have control over how much product is being dispensed. The holes are a bit large.

Final thoughts

I liked the NYX Professional Makeup HD Studio Finishing Powder  but I thought the cons outweighed the overall product use. As I mentioned I felt it set my makeup well but was just too dusty for me. I’m going to keep it just in case I need it. At this point, I purchased another NYX Professional product in a compact form to see how it compares to this one. I’ll let you know how that goes.

The overall price point for the NYX Professional Makeup HD Studio Finishing Powder may vary from retailer to retailer. I’ve seen it from $7 to around $10 USD.
