How to avoid sickness while traveling

Traveling to a foreign country? You’re not alone. In 2010, 940 million people traveled across the world– and more than half experienced a health problem while away.

These health problems can range from a minor illness to an illness needing medical care.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently published an 11-year study that looked at 42,000 people who became sick while traveling. Looking at common illnesses and areas of the world where you’re most likely to get an infection, the report found that those visiting sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, South-central Asia and South America were most likely to seek medical care when they returned home.

The study also found that the three most common illnesses when traveling are malaria, typhoid and dengue. The only decrease it reported was in malaria cases – most likely due to the fact that it’s become easier to get and use medicines that prevent malaria.
