I shared a post earlier this week discussing routers. I thought I’d share a bit more about the recent router I purchased. I needed a router a few weeks back. I’ve added a few more tech devices to my home network so I needed to boost my wi-fi signal.
That being said I’m a total novice when it comes to routers. I knew that a router could help amplify your wi-fi signal and allow you to connect other devices to the router if your modem doesn’t have enough ports.
Besides that, I was at a loss. I didn’t know what I needed or even what to look for. So I basically started searching like many of us do. I used Google and just ended up more confused. Some of the product details were a bit too technical for me.
What you need to know
What I learned, for the most part, was that you need to know a few things before deciding on a router.
what you need to know:
- the overall range of signal (where you need the signal to reach)
- the number of devices you’ll be connecting
- modem it will be connected too (ex. a provider such as a cable company or phone company)
If you have these ideas in mind it may help you in your search for a router. Another thing to consider is available space. Some routers may be a bit larger than others.
Don’t forget
Don’t forget that depending on your ISP provider modem you may need to make some settings changes. This will be something you can learn more about through your ISP provider. Some ISP providers have a list of routers they suggest that will work with the modem they provided.
Now let’s get back to the topic at hand, shall we.
NETGEAR – AC1750 DUAL-BAND WI-FI 5 ROUTER
I ended up picking the NETGEAR router because it was on sale and offered a decent range. Since my modem is set in a back room I needed it to reach out towards the front of the house. Which so far this router has accomplished very well.
This router is stated to cover a range of up to 1,500 square feet. The router has 5 ports in the back along with a UBS port in the front. The box also includes an ethernet cable and the power adapter along with the router.
A few issues I had
I will admit that since I’m a novice I was very disappointed by NETGEAR’s lack of set up information. Basically they want you to download an app and set up the product. I did that but as the router was being set up the app crashed. The router card also included a link to a site to set it up but again there was an issue and the page wouldn’t display all I had was an error message. I did manage to set the router up but due to the app crashing, I was locked out of NETGEAR’s login page. S
So guess what I had to do? I had to reset the router and start all over. Aside from that, I was able to get everything up and running without any further issues. I will note that NETGEAR does offer phone support and forums for tech issues.
Placement is key
I’ve read that placement of a router is key to helping the signal. So I placed it on a shelf above my modem. I will say that the power adapter is a decent length but you may have to make accommodations if you will be placing this on a higher shelf. The ethernet cable is a decent length too. If you live in a two-story home remember walls and floors may create a barrier so the signal may weaken.
The router has 3 antennas that you can adjust to help direct your signal. The router is a larger size so I had to clear space for it on my shelf. The size is listed below
info sourced from Best Buy Product page
- Product Height 2.55 inches
- Product Length 7.5 inches
- Product Width 7.79 inches
Performance
Overall I’ve had the router for a few weeks now. The performance is good. I was able to get a clear Wi-fi signal all the way out to about 20 to 25 ft from my front door. So for me, that’s a plus. I can stream Amazon Prime Video in my living room with no problem. I can also stream music with no issue too.
Like with any product there may be some issues with speed. I have about 5 to 7 items connect to my home wi-fi at one time. So this may cause the signal to be a bit slow if you have a number of devices connected at one time.
That being shared for me my wi-fi signal seems to be holding well. I haven’t had any disconnection or loss of signal when browsing the internet on my phone or tablet.
Final thoughts
All I can say at this point the NETGEAR Router fits my needs. So I can’t complain I guess. The signal has been steady and I haven’t had any issues connecting to the internet. You can learn more by visiting the links provided in the post.
The router below is a step up from the one I purchased.
