My mom has an interesting piece of mail today. She was sent a scam letter.
The letter was very reminiscent of the old inheritance scams from a few years back. Where people reached out to you because you had a similar last name to a person who had recently died. Then they would ask you to claim the money for a small portion of it.
Here are two posts I shared about this in the past.
The letter
This letter was sent in a regular envelope. It was stated to be from Ontario Canada. I live in Southern California so that was the first red flag.
I was the one who opened the letter because I knew it was a bit suspicious.
When I opened it I was met with a plain piece of paper that claimed to be from a law firm based in Canada.
The firm Peterson, Reynolds, and Robers Law Frim to be exact (I’ll get more to them later.)
The letter was being sent from Harry Peterson. So one of the head attorneys at the firm.
The letter is a basic inheritance scam. They had someone with our last name die in Canada. Yet they couldn’t find any living family so while the attorney was her in LA they mailed this letter. The insurance policy that is in question is over 9 million dollars (Canadian) I would assume.
They are asking my mom to claim it and give them 10 % of the claim.
I’m adding a scanned copy of the letter and a PDF in case anyone wants to read it fully.
Here’s the kicker
The contact info is a Gmail account with a landline number and a Fax number.
The email is : petersonharry555@gmail.com
The phone numbers are 1 437-755-0860 and Fax 1 416-649-9411
The letter also included the office address of 120 Adelaide Street W. Toronto Ontario M5H 1T1.
I was able to confirm the address is real as is the law firm.
I found that the fax number is associated with a IP carrier that works in the US and Canada with businesses.
Things get even fishier
As Ned Flanders would say “I don’t mean to be a suspicious Aloysius…” But when I looked up this law firm I sent them an email because their Contact Us email was listed on their site.
Well, I had a failure notice from Google.
Address not found
Your message wasn’t delivered to info@petersonreynoldsandroberts.com because the address couldn’t be found, or is unable to receive mail.
The response from the remote server was:550 5.1.1 User unknown
the failed email notice i had from Google
What I find laughable
The watermark on the letter makes me laugh. I think it’s supposed to read ORIGINAL DOCUMENT but is cut off for some reason. This looks like someone just created this letter and did a slap job of adding the watermark.
You can also tell that this has been made because even the letterhead looks cheap. The letter is printed on regular printer paper.
Not heavy-weight paper.
You can report this letter
You can report the letter to the FTC. I did this I don’t know if I’ll hear anything back but at least I did my part.
All we can do is share the word about this scam once again.
