It seems that Messenger is the latest platform to be used by scammers and sex workers. Granted this probably isn’t anything new. But it’s the first time someone I know was messaged by a possible sex worker or scammer.

I don’t know for certain if the person who contacted my friend is a sex worker but the way the conversation was portrayed it seems likely (to me).

This random profile contacted my friend B. The profile had a photo of a young woman maybe mid 20’s with red hair. Her name was Sophia. Her last name started with an R. Well he shared some of the messages with me. I will list them below. Please note some of these may not be suitable for work due to language.

The chat (NSWF)

I assume the chat started randomly. All I know is that I saw a screenshot pop up in my messenger window.

Please note I edited the screenshots to cover the profile picture used because they could be someone’s photo and not a stock image. Screenshots were shared with my friend’s permission.

I also edited the name because this could be someone’s legal name.

The chat took a quick turn and became sexual in nature.

Sophia seems to be very determined to have a hookup.

I noticed in these screenshots that she is very intent on a hookup and she needs to make sure the person is alone or lives alone. I also like how she didn’t question B’s reference to a Friend with Benefits remark.

Then trying to entice him even further she throws in a random photo of what she claims is her. I will admit I didn’t edit the screenshot to block out the photo. I did this because I have a feeling that it’s used during many chats with random men.

I will note I was the one asking the top question.

the messenger sent him a photo of a woman. Who she is he had no idea.

As determined as this Sophia person is for a hookup she sure doesn’t seem to understand distance very well. If she’s in Texas and my friend B is in Colorado was she going to take a flight over to see him?

This messenger seems to not understand distance.

It seems she doesn’t respond to questions either. When she stated :

And how long service could you like to go for?

i knew she was probably not from the US. The statement makes no sense.

the messenger doesn’t seem to let up.

Once again she goes back to the hookup line.

Messenger keeps insisting a hookup.

After the previous screenshot Sophia requested B’s address. He didn’t give it to her and blocked her.

Scammer or Sex Worker?

I’ll let you pick which one this could be. For me i think it might be either one. I thought it was odd that she kept cycling back to the hookup with me line.

I wouldn’t see why sex workers or scammers wouldn’t use messenger. For a while sex workers were using Skype to try to start chats with potential clients.

Scammers are everywhere so nothing surprises me anymore.

If it’s a scam what’s gained?

I would think if the scammer wants information they figure a lonely older man or maybe young one will give them something worth while. A home addressed can be used for wire fruad scams or other scams.

If they request further info such as banking or credit info they can gain more.

What’s the takeaway from this?

I would say the main one would be don’t talk to strangers no matter how bored you are. Another could be don’t believe everything that you read or see in terms of shared photos.
