Back in May, I had a surprise. My neighbor brought over some kittens. He couldn’t care for them because he was caring for another cat and her kittens. I accepted and now have 3 new kittens in the house. FYI the header image was taken the day the boys arrived. Sam is on the far left, Dylan is in the center and Teddy is on the right.

I thought I’d share some low-cost or even free kitten toys that you can use from things you have around the house.

All toy suggestions will have to be taken into consideration when it comes to your kitten’s age.

Which cat doesn’t love a box right? Depending on the size of your kitten you can use a flat open box for them to hop in and out of. You can create a tunnel by taping or sliding two boxes together.

This is a great use for extra shipping boxes or if you have empty cat food or other drink boxes.

Old socks

Let’s face it like puppies kittens tend to bite as they are teething. We found a great use for old socks. If you have a few socks that are worse for wear you can give them to your kittens.

I would suggest this be done with cotton blend socks since they are a bit more durable. Depending on the age and size of your kitten you can make one large toy or two smaller ones.

How to make a sock chew toy

What you’ll need:

  • a clean pari of old socks
  • scissors
  • neddle and thread
    Optional items
  • a ruler
  • pen/pencil or chalk to mark your cutting line

step one

Take one of the clean old socks and trim the elastic off above the foot. Depending on the length of the elastic band you can make one large toy or two smaller ones. If you opt to make two you can mark your cutting lines.

step two

You can roll the elastic into a donut shape. Once it’s secure and tight you can sew it together. You don’t have to be an expert sewer. If you can sew a button on you can do this. You don’t have to sew all the way around just where the donut come together. Once you think it’s strong enough tie off the thread and trim above the knot. You can hide the knot in the sock if you like that way your kitten won’t get it.

you can repeat these steps for the rest of the sock.

Dylan loved his sock toy so much I think it’s lost under the sofa somewhere.

Paper rolls

Paper towel and toilet paper rolls are great fun for kittens. Y may have to cut the larger rolls into segments for your kitten but who doesn’t have them leftover when finishing a paper roll.

Some kittens may be a bit startled by the roll at first but quickly enjoy them.

Other low cost toys

Some other toys you can use are tennis balls for older kittens or old wool dryer balls. You can also find ping pong balls at your local 99 cents or dollar store.

Old hair ties or scrunchies along with larger caps and even straws can keep your kitten busy for hours.

I hope this post was helpful.
