Over the last week or so, I’ve experienced a few things that make me wonder if common courtesy is dead.
Now with smartphones, everyone connects with their loved ones at any moment. But I think sometimes they pick the most inopportune ones.
The waiting room howls
For example last week I was in a room full of people waiting to see the eye doctor. There was a woman who had her phone volume set to high. Suddenly the room is flooded with the sounds of a coyote howling. I guess that was her text notification. This video shares a similar audio track.
The woman proceeded to speak to her phone (voice-to-text) in a rather normal voice. Just like she was at home. From what I caught it seems someone there was a new baby in her family.
I understand this lady was excited to share the news but many of the people in the waiting room were wondering why she had her phone on so loud. This couple sitting near me was chatting about it.
I know people feel comfortable having loud conversations in public but it made me wonder if common courtesy is a thing of the past.
It happens more and more
I’ve been out in public lots of times and encountered people who do these things. As I mentioned smartphones keep us connected but I think there is a time and place. I’ve overheard chats about relationship issues while shopping. To someone loudly discussing a sinus infection at the pharmacy.
I’ve even heard a woman telling someone that people were jealous of them. She had a child with her and that poor kid just wanted to hide in the clothing rack because he was tired of his mom yelling on the phone while she shopped.
Is Common Courtesy dead?
Every time hear someone loudly yelling into a phone (speaker phone) or even having a loud phone call in public I think it is.
I also think this goes hand in hand with other common sense rules that have fallen by the wayside over the years.
I’m not against people chatting on the phone but at least remember where you are. Not everyone wants to hear your phone chiming or other ring tones going off at maximum volume.
