For those of you who haven’t heard Instagram is testing out a new test feature (if we can call it that). They will be hiding likes. Or better yet the likes will still be there but only visible to you.
You can read a bit more about this by visiting the NPR link I found. It was also shared via WIRED (That’s where I first saw the post).
Why is this happening
From what I could gather from reading the WIRED article it seems that Instagram wants to be a happier(For the lack of a better term) social media platform. There also seems to be an interest in trying to help people stop obsessing over likes. Let’s face it we all have seen people who get upset when their photo hasn’t hit a set like threshold.
My own two cents
I have my own two cents to add to this. I think this may also be a way to crack down on users who are buying fake likes and overall engagement. We are all aware that it is possible. Again this is my opinion of why this may be happening as well. I also think this may help weed out accounts that are fake (Possibly) or for accounts that spam other profiles too.
I don’t think this is such a bad idea. I understand that many people who are considered influencers will pitch a fit but again at this time, it’s only a test. If it helps people share content they love without obsessing over the number of likes it has maybe it is better. I for one will don’t mind this happening. If it weeds out spam accounts I welcome it.
Should we freak out?
I would say no you shouldn’t freak out. Since at this time it’s in the testing phase it may only affect a select number of accounts. To be frank I have a feeling it may be tested on larger accounts with a large follower count then make it’s way downward.
Either way if your profile counts in this test it’s going to okay there is no need to freak out. I know many people consider themselves Influencers are worried this will have a major effect on their ability to collaborate with brands. But again let’s see what happens before people jump ship.
