Planning on getting a new pet this Holiday season please consider this before rushing out to get one.

a new puppy or kitten is great but…

A new puppy or kitten is great but boy are they work. You have to train them. Depending on the pet and their age they may take considerable time to train or acclimate to your household.

I currently have 3 10 week old kittens so I know what I’m talking about.

Don’t get me started on the scratching furniture and playing with the blinds. Let alone dealing with accidents or litter box mishaps.

consider adopting an older pet

Many shelters and recuse have older pets that are often overlooked this time of year. Everyone is so interested in the cute puppy or kitten that they don’t think of adopting an older pet.

Many shelters or recuses may have a discounted adoption fee for pets over a year old.

The best part about an older pet is at times they may be calmer. They are well socialized (this may vary) or they may have already been spayed or neutered.

Older pets have a lot of love to give and depending on their age they can be a part of your family for years to come.

Consider the overlooked breeds or colors

Always consider breeds to coat colors that may be overlooked. Granted do your research for dog or cat breeds to make sure they are the right fit for you and your home. But still consider a pet you may have not thought about in the past.

For me I always thought black cats were odd but once we had Shadow this changed.

Now with Smokey it’s even better.

Smokey’s a lot more adventerous then Shadow was so he keeps us on our toes.

Black cats can be a bit fickle but they are loving and entertaining.

I’ve also read that black and white cats are also overlooked at shelters. I find that hard to believe. They can be so loving and cuddly.

Ziggy is the prime example of this. I like to joke with him that he’s a secert Siamese. He’s very affectionate.

Other factors to consider

You may want to consider how much time you can spend with your pet as well as your budget.

But once you figure out what you’d like in a pet please adopt one. There are many pets waiting for loving homes.
