It looks like the iCloud scam is back again. Yes, it’s not a new scam but this time I had a new scam version. I had a text message. My previous encounters with the iCloud scam were with automated phone calls.
Similar text messages
The message was straightforward and to the point. But it was addressed to a Sarah. I noticed that many of these scams are addressed to women. They are usually a Sara or Sarah, or Susan.
A year or two ago I was having weekly or at least monthly messages for Sara stating she had won various prizes and that they needed to be claimed.
This text is no different.
The phone number
The text came from a random number from the state of Maine. I live on the other side of the US so I don’t know anyone in Maine.
the number is 1-207-298-3916.
the last 4 numbers I’ve seen in other scam-related calls.
The text
The text was straightforward and to the point. It wanted to notify Sarah to upgrade her iCloud before her files were deleted. It also asked that she visit a link to do so.
Sarah, Your personal files will be deleted soon. Upgrade your icloud storage before its too late: emphasisvital.com/OwWcMub
Here’s the funny thing
I find it funny because I don’t own any Apple products and all of these texts are wasted on me. I just report them as spam to my cell provider.
What you can do
If you are sent a text like this one and you do have an apple product or use the iCloud you can always check your account directly.
You can also report these types of scams to Apple or your service provider.
