I recently was selected to try a free sample product of a meatless product. Thanks to Social Nature and the brand Quorn.
I will admit I’m not one to eat plant-based or meat alternative foods often. So these types of products I always try with an open mind.
The product
I was able to buy a pack of Quorn meatless nuggets. This was a box that was sold in the refrigerated section of my local grocery store. it was located in the meatless or plant-based section.
The box was a 10.6 oz box. It includes a decent amount of nuggets in it. I think it was around 14.
The nuggets are plant-based. They can be cooked in the microwave or oven.
Ingredients
These meatless nuggets aren’t vegan. They are made with wheat and mycoprotein. From what I read from Quorn that is a fungus-based product. So if you are sensitive to mushrooms you may want to make sure you won’t have an allergic reaction.
You can learn more about mycoprotein by visiting Quorn.
I wasn’t able to find the exact product I purchased via Quorn to share an ingredient list.
how to cook them
You can cook these meatless nuggets just like you would a traditional chicken nugget. You can cook them in the oven or the microwave. I however opted to cook them in a pan on the stove. I didn’t feel like turning on the toaster oven for 14 nuggets.
They cooked evenly and didn’t seem to burn. They are lightly breaded. Since I cooked them in a pan they didn’t crisp up as well as cooking them in an oven would have.
I will add that I didn’t seem to have any issue with them sticking to the pan because I used a small amount of grape seed oil when cooking them.
When fully cooked
When fully cooked the meatless nuggets did look like traditional chicken nuggets. Granted mine were a little darker because they scorched a bit. Nothing to bad but the did turn black or dark brown.
I will admit that they have the same texture as a traditional chicken nugget. When you cut one it looks the same on the inside too.
How do they taste?
Now here’s where everyone may have a difference of opinion. When I bit into the first one which was the one I cut in half it tasted okay. But the next one I bit into had a bit of a different taste. It could have been because it wasn’t cooked or warmed through fully. Or it may have just been that the first time i tried had time to cool.
They didn’t taste bad they just had a different flavor. It’s hard to explain. Some tasted a bit buttery while others had a bit of a bland taste.
My dad liked them. My mom was like me she thought they were good but she felt they needed a bit more flavor.
final thoughts and where to buy
final thoughts
So all in all these were a nice introduction to a meat alternative food. Being that they contain egg whites they aren’t considered vegan food.
They would make a nice snack food or a full meal when added to a dish.
I’m not sure if i would buy it again in the future though. It’s nothing against the brand i just felt the box should have contained a bit more.
where to buy
I found that the box i bought was reasonably priced it was around $6 or $7 USD. Price may vary by retailer.
