Let’s face it many of us are participating in more virtual meetings these days. And like it or not we might end up with a less then optimal video and audio feed. I think we’ve all attended or viewed a meeting where you can’t make out what the person is saying. Or their video feed isn’t the best. Granted this may not always be the case but I thought I’d share a few tips on how to upgrade your tech that won’t break the bank.

Most of the time you don’t have to break the bank to improve on what you already have. I will also add you can use items you already have at home.

lighting

Let’s start with the simple things first. Lighting is key when you are in a virtual meeting or in any type of video format. You can try to sit near a window or turn on a few extra lights near you. That way you aren’t in the dark or shadowed. I like to use an LED desk lamp to add extra light. If you are using lighting for videos outside of a work meeting you can invest in a softbox light or ring light, or other lighting options.

mic

Like with lighting sound is another important factor when it comes to video. Yes most laptop webcams have built in mics but they may not always be the best. They may also pick up more background nice. For example I have a cooling pad connected to my laptop and my built in mic pics up the hissing of the fan.

Mics don’t have to be expensive. You can pick up a USB mic for around $20. Yes, you may get what you pay for but if it’s only going to be used for work meetings that’s okay. You can also purchase headphones with a built-in mic as well.

Having an external mic is nice it allows you a crisper sound quality. You can also be heard clearer when you are video chatting or in virtual work situations.

I have a Blue Snowball mic and so far I love it. I would suggest however you may want to purchase a different mic stand if you have limited space on your desk or work area.

you can also pick up a filter shield if you like as well.

webcam

I know most if not all laptops have a built in webcam. I also know that people use their phones as well during virtual meetings. If your like me you may have to adjust your laptop screen to fit your needs. I also like an externa webcam because I feel like i have more control. That being said if you have a desktop a external webcam may be something you need.

So here are a few suggestions. I’ve always used Logitech webcams. It’s just something I have a preference for. But I think any external webcam may be great.

like with any tech webcams range in price and quality. You can find some for under $20 and they go up from there. Each product may have its pros and cons but that will be something you’ll have to look into.

Logitech cam under $40

Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 this is the webcam I have. I love this webcam. It includes plug and play tech. You can also install the product software or additional setting options.

I bought this back in 2017 and still think this info holds true.

Here’s another version of this webcam.

Some simple upgrades can make a big difference. I hope this post was helpful.
