Desk Lamps: They just aren’t for reading

A few years ago I reviewed a number of desk lamps. That being shared I realized that I had more lamps then I would ever use. Well long story short I ended up sharing some with friends. I even sold one at a yard sale too. But i still have a number of them.

One day I was in need of an extra light source for a photo. Well the thought struck me to use one of the many desk lamps I have sitting in a box.

As you can see from the above Instagram post i used two desk lamps to crate a makeshift light box. I will say that depending on your lighting you may have to do some adjusting for photos. It may also depend on the product you are working with as well. By this i mean if you have a product or package that his shiny or metallic in nature.

Any desk lamp or table top lamp will work. I happen to have a few LED lamps that I like. Either way as long as they can be adjusted to fit your lighting needs it’s great. I found that if they have a flexible next or a pivoting head that’s a big plus. I’ve even used a gooseneck style floor lamp too. So your not always limited to a set kind of lamp.

Dimmable lamps are also a great advantage as well. If you just need a bit more light you can set it to fit your needs. I also enjoy the ones that have a color changing option as well. Personally, I prefer daylight (Bright white) light when i take photos or do other work including reading. But this may also depend on your preference as well. Some dimmable lights offer up to 6 or more settings. They change from a soft white (Yellowish) warm light to a bright white daylight option. I’ve found a few rechargeable lamps I loved. They aren’t available via Amazon at this point but I’ll still add a few that are similar at the end of the post.

I also wanted to mentioned that if your using a table or desk lamp you need to make sure the cord is long enough to reach your product or photo set up.

I’ve also found desk lamps to be useful for adding extra lighting to videos too. If your posting a quick video on YouTube, Instagram or Facebook or any other social platforms good lighting is key. I like to add an extra LED light to my Youtube videos if I feel my ring light isn’t helping. I also might add one if it’s a gloomy or overcast day.

If you use a general plug in desk lamp You can test which watt or Lumens (LED) fit your needs. I usually go for around a 40-watt bulb. The LED equivalent is around 5.5 W or 450 Lumens. (I’ll add these too at the bottom)

I will suggest that if your using a standard plug in desk or table lamp make sure to read the proper bulb size and watt maximum for your product just to avoid any issues.

Granted natural light is always best when you take photos or videos but as we know that may not always be available so if you have a desk lamp on hand why not try it.

This lamp was similar to one I had. It’s lightweight and has a flexible neck.
