I had an interesting email today. I thought I’d share it with all of you. As we know job scams are always something to look out for. I think I had a job offer for cryptocurrency mining via an app today.
I’m not very clear on cryptocurrency but from the info, I read it was clear that was what the job was about. It stated that it was an administrative assistant job. I’ll get to that a bit more shortly.
Here’s a link to the FTC sharing about Cryptocurrency. Along with another from the FBI.
The email
The email was very basic. It offered a quick hello greeting followed by the following text.
We are pleased to inform you that your resume was carefully selected for this open position at our company, from one of the jobs seeking related websites. All information, as well as the instructions, regarding this offer, are provided with the file attached and must be sent only to an email address below. If you are interested in the position please reply us back. Best Regards.
Before I go any further adding the text from the attachment info I’d like to add this. The email was sent from Aiden Wilson <aiden.w@heritageofkingsmodelschools.com>. This has some importance.
The attached form text/Job descrption
I previewed the text and it was pretty straightforward. It listed what the pay would be as well as the tasks you would be performing.
Job description
during my research
During my research, I found out that Cyrax is a real company/app. They do have an administrative assistant position open. So out of curiosity, i clicked on the apply link. Well, it led me to a simple application form.
Here’s where it got weird. Like with any job it asked for your name, address, resume but it also asked this of you.
To submit your social handles/links and a selfie with your ID and a sheet of paper with the Cyrax app URL written on it.
The selfie with ID is a big red flag to me in regards to ID fraud.
Other things I found out
The email was sent from heritageofkingsmodelschools.com. I found out that the school does exist. It seems to be based in South Africa. Nigeria to be exact.
As for the Cyrax app from the WHOIS info the site is around 3 months old. So that’s another red flag. Another thing that is a bit off was that everything is done anonymously. The company also seems to be based in Iceland.
I also found the earning rate to be a bit high for a 20 hour a week job as well as an 8% commission. That would be like a full-time job to earn the quoted $3,500 USD a month or up to over $40,000 USD a year.
The fact that the text states that you need to be US-based makes me wonder if these are the same people you see all over social media claiming so and so helped them earn thousands of dollars in a week by using X trading or investment brand.
If it seems too good to be true
As usual, if it seems too good to be true it probably is. It’s better to be safe and err on the side of caution before your in the middle of some ID fraud or other shady business practices.
I’m always a bit wary of unsolicited job offers but I thought I’d share this for everyone to know it could be a scam.
