Closet cleaning tips Part One

Well today I opted to clean part of my closet. I had been putting off all year. Since i have limited space i try to keep things that i wear on a regular basis close at hand but like always things end up being cluttered or just a plain messy. Before i started my task I usually either listen to music or put on a movie. I know that if i do this I can get the task done faster. Because I tend to make things into a chore when I don’t want to do them. Today I chose a movie. I usually watch something I’ve watched many times before so I don’t get so distracted. 

As you can see it was a mess. I have a standard sized closet. I had put off cleaning it most of the year. Even I admit that was far beyond my normal jumbled mess. So i figured i’d clean it out today. 

One of the things I’ve found helpful is to take everything out. Today I opted to organized the bottom half of the closet. Which means all the piles of clothes on the bottom. After I plied all of that on the bed I  took out these.

I’ve found that storage totes help a lot when it comes to organizing my clothes by season. I have two that primarily hold my winter/fall clothing such as sweats and stuff like that. the other holds my summer stuff such as extra shorts shirt and other things I won’t wear until next year. The third tote I have in my closet is like an extra stuff storage bin for extra blankets and stuff. 

After I took all that stuff out i looked through them to see what i could put away. I ended up sticking with 2 of the 3 totes since the had clothing in them. So i set to the task of sorting all of my clothing out on the bed. I pretty much found the clothes that fit each tote. 

as you can see this tote had all of my fall/winter clothes in it. So i picked out what i wanted to take out to have on hand . I ended up folding up anything I didn’t need to wear this time of year and put it inside. I had some extra summer stuff so I managed to get it all in there as well.

I closed that tote up and put it in the closet. 

I managed to go through the tote that had all of my summer clothes in it and organized it a little better so i could fit more in to it. 

I also took a few extra shorts off a few hangers I had in the closet to save space and put them away. I managed to fit a lot of stuff into it. 

I will admit i over packed it a bit so I had to move some clothes to the larger tote in the pictures prior to these. 

Once all that was done i picked through a tone of shirts that could go so i cut them up for rags. I also found a few items I had forgotten I had such as pants and a few misplaced shirts. I ended up folding everything I was going to use and stacking them on top of the totes. 

Here’s what I managed so far. Granted it’s not 100% better but it is at least organized. i will fit it a bit more this week. 

I will post more tips as I go along cleaning. Hopefully they will be helpful.
