This morning when I turned on my phone I noticed I had a very random text message. Granted we may all get text messages. Some may be personal or others may be more along the lines of marketing. I’ve had my fair share of spam messages over the years but this one this morning was just very random.
The message
This was a very random text as I mentioned above.
Message text
The text was from a short code SMS number. You can read about SMS here (Wikipedia). It also included the verification number. Verification for what I have no idea. What got me the most was that the text had an expiration date. The text expired at 11:20 pm Pacific standard time.
After I saw this I couldn’t think of anything I had signed up for that required a verification code number. Even when you have two-factor authorization for many websites it’s sent to you via the same SMS text code number they use and is added to the text message thread.
What I found out
So I did some searching and found out that this seems to be some sort of marketing tactic for a financial brand. To be precise from what I found it’s a company named Spectrum Finances. I searched Google for the SMS text code of 67669.
I found the info via this website link I don’t get what I was supposed to use the verification code for or why the text was sent after 11 pm but I wasn’t going to risk clicking on any unknown links or codes.
It was strange that there wasn’t a text link to tell you what the code was meant for. Again I played it safe and didn’t follow up or text back.
Now that I’m doing a bit more searching the Spectrum Finances page has a page you can paste your text code. Again I don’t get why I would want more information from a Finance group I’ve never heard of or even contacted.
Beware and think before you click
All I can say is if you get a text like this one do some research. Also, don’t click any unknown links. It’s better to be safe than sorry. You never know where the link will take you or if it will add some sort of malware or some sort of other malicious bugs on your phone.
