When most people hear the term Beta testing they may automatically think of software testing. But this isn’t always the case.
Beta testing can be for software but it can also be for products as well. This may range from apps to in-home product usage.
A bit of background on beta testing
I thought I’d take this section to share a bit about beta testing. Beta testing may vary from platform to platform. You may be required to own a select product to participate. other times the platform may ask if you own the product in question.
What is Beta Testing?
Beta testing is when a company selects users to test a software or product. Some companies may ask users via their email list. While others may partner with sites that offer testing opportunities to those who qualify. I’ll get more into that later on.
How long does beta testing last?
Every testing platform or panel has different time frames. Some may be short as little as a week or under a month. Other testing opportunities may last months to even years.
Some platforms may even have various product tests happening during the timeframe.
For example, if you are testing screenshot software you may also be able to test video editing software if the same company seeking testers.
What kind of products do you test?
You can test a variety of products. Again some can be software. While others might be apps or physical products such as cell phones or tablets. Or even speakers or appliances.
do you have to buy anything?
To be honest this may vary from platform to platform. For the products I’ve beta tested I haven’t had to buy anything. But I can’t give you a definitive answer to this.
Do you get to keep the products you beta test?
Some platforms may allow you to keep the product if it’s a long-term beta test. Other times you may be required to send the item back.
If you are required to send the item back at the end of the testing period you will be provided with the return shipping label. This may be the case when beta testing a phone or tablet. Or if you test other tech items.
A few things you should know
There are a few things you should know before signing up for a beta testing platform or panel.
You’ll be asked a lot of questions
Many of the questions are pretty simple your name, address, etc. Some sites may want to know about your wifi speed or internet type.
If you will be testing a product such as a smart appliance the platform might ask about the home size, number of rooms, and types of flooring.
If you are testing a cell phone or tablet they may ask who your service provider is and if you are willing to use the device for the duration of the test.
Some platforms or panels may get a bit technical with select devices such as having to run wiring or connect devices to existing systems.
You’ll be asked to sign an NDA
For all of the beta testing platforms or panels, you will be asked to sign a Non-Disclousre agreement.
This means that you agree to keep the product or software your testing out of the public eye. Basically that you won’t be sharing upcoming software releases or the actual product via social media.
So this means that you can’t share about the testing online or share photos of the products.
Many companies are serious about this so they may keep tabs on their users outside of the testing panels or platforms.
do you get paid?
Some panels may give you a compensation payment but it may vary from test to test. If you are testing a product the product may be your compensation. Again this may vary from panel to panel.
Is beta testing right for you?
Here’s the thing I can’t say if it is or not. Everyone is different. You can try it and see. Even if you join a platform there isn’t a guarantee that you will be selected for testing a product.
Just note that with any testing panel, the platforms will request you put in your work as well. They want you to share any issues, feedback, or praise of the products or software. You may have weekly tasks to complete as well.
