I’ve made my fair share of mystery bag or box purchases over the last few years. For me, it’s usually the price point and the product availability. Granted being it’s a mystery box or bag you never know what you will get and if the products suit your skin tone or type.
I think it’s the excitement of getting a good deal.
Mystery BAGS OR boxes are a surprise
No matter what brand you purchase from you will always have a surprise in the box or bag. Be it a product you weren’t expecting or a color palette that may not be for you. You may think some purchases are a bit of a disappointment or you might be happy with your purchase. Everyone’s results are different. I had a few in the past that left me a bit surprised.
brands can be sneaky
Let’s face it if you’re paying a set price for a mystery purchase you don’t know what you are going to get. Some cosmetics and skincare brands may offer a variety of products in a box. Some may range from 4 or 6 products others may be much more.
Prices may vary too. The cheapest box I ever purchased was under $30 USD and the most expensive was around $60 or so (I can’t recall the exact price it’s been about 4 years.)
The reason I say some brands may be sneaky is that you may be quoted a set amount of items but they may be repeat items. For example, I once purchased a MAC mystery bag or box (can’t recall which it was). Half the order was lipsticks. You can check out that video here.
Brands may send duplicate boxes
If you are someone who may buy 2 mystery purchases to see if they differ be ready for the same products. I two ordered an e.l.f mystery bag earlier this year . One for me and one for my mom. Well, they included the same things except for one item in each box.
one box included a lip gloss while the other included a face product. Aside from that, all the items were exactly the same.
Some items may be Bold
The most recent mystery box I bought was from Colour Pop back in August. It included 15 items. It covered makeup, skincare, and accessories.
One thing I’ve noticed about mystery purchases over the years is that brands like to send products that are either overstocks or bold colors. So be ready for lively colors.
This is great if your willing to experiment with colors but some people like to stick to neutrals or pallets that suit them.
I will admit this is the largest mystery purchase I’ve made. it included 15 items in total. Half I’m going to gift so for me it was worth the price point because the selection was varied enough that I could share with friends and family.
This purchase did include one bright blue eyeliner. Which I’ll probably use. But the rest was pretty neutral colors.
not all mystery purchases suit everyone
As I mentioned above since you will be sent a mix of products you never know what you will get. So be prepared for products that may not suit you or fit your style or look. For me, that’s not a big deal because I usually gift the items I don’t think I’ll use. Especially if they are eye shadow palettes that have colors someone I know uses often.
Are mystery bags and boxes worth it?
I’ll say they can be if you find one for a good deal and has items you may use. I’ll say this much most can be a surprise, to say the least. Granted they are a gamble since you don’t know what you’ll get. Most brands list if it will include skincare, makeup, etc. But you may always be surprised.
I would say start off small with a less expensive box or bag just to see if the products fit your needs.
Ultimately you as the buyer have to determine if the mystery bag or box purchase was for you. For me, it’s been mixed feelings. I’ve had some great products and other times I’m a bit sad it didn’t include products or shades i usually use.
