Please note this post does include legitimate business names and phone numbers. This info was obtained via a Google search.

I had another Wells Fargo phishing attempt today (9/20/2022). This time it was a phone call. Like the email, I shared on Monday. This call was highly suspicious.

The call

The caller

I had the call a little after 9:30 am. Caller ID listed it as Focus Services. The phone number is :

801-393-1635. This is an actual business name and phone number of said business (more on that later.

The call message

The call an automated message. It stated the following (please note this isn’t the full text but a summary of what I can recall.)

The robot voice of a female caller stated:

Hello this is Wells Fargo. We are calling you to inform you that your Business account is pending approval due to a nearly $250 charge was pending payment. (The amount was either $245 or $248 and something cents.) If you would like to speak to a representaitve press one now. Remember press one to speak to a representative.

paraphrasing of wells fargo phishing scam call

After the robo voice suggested I press one the final time the call hung up.

Here’s the thing

I only answered the call because I thought it was from one of the survey groups I’m a part of. I also found it a bit odd because the call isn’t directed to anyone. As soon as you answer the robo voice starts talking. It doesn’t even say Wells Fargo customer. It starts off with This is Wells Fargo.

I also found it odd that the robo voice shared about opening a business account. It also was strange that it stated an under $250 amount pending payment.

What you shouldn’t do

If you have a call like this one never ever press any numbers. Always hang up and contact your bank or financial institution. Let them know of this phishing attempt. Even if you think it’s a scam you can always share this with them.

I reached out to wells Fargo

I reached out to Wells Fargo via their 1-800 customer service line. The rep I spoke with basically told me it was a phishing scam. Which I knew it was but I still wanted to alert them. I even gave them the phone number that contacted me. They sort of played it off since I didn’t speak to anyone from the phishing call or give out any banking information the rep told me not to worry about it.

The caller is a real company

The number and name that was listed via my caller ID is a legitimate company. I found this out by doing a search using Google.

Focus Services 801-393-1635 is based in Utah. They offer a variety of business solutions for companies. From what I could gather from browsing their website they deal with customer service and contact solutions.

Spoofing isn’t anything new. I’ve had a few calls like these in the past but nothing like this that actually lists the company name and phone number. Past calls were one number off of legitimate business numbers.

I’d like to add don’t harass the companies that call you either. some people call a missed call back and are rude to the person who answers the phone. Many times these companies don’t even know their number is being spoofed.

Let’s pass this info along that way no one falls for this phishing scam.
