This scam to add a sticker or wrap to your car to make money isn’t new. But I guess it’s popping up again. My mom had a text this morning from a Gmail account. Like many of these scams the texts are brief and claim you’ll earn a few hundred dollars pay.
The text
The text was sent from a dora owens 1982 from a Gmail account.
Here’s what the text message statted:
Going to your normal places with your car/truck, you can put our
sticker and get a payments of $500 weekly,
if you are interested, text back.
This isn’t a new scam
As I mentioned before this isn’t a new scam. However, you can spot the grammar errors and odd sentence structure. Such as $500 payments weekly. Or the put our sticker not Use or sticker or advertise using our sticker
Also being that many of use are being asked to stay home do to CO-VID19 (Corona Virus) I doubt your going to be driving around unless you are an essential worker or going to the grocery store or pharmacy.
The other thing that got me is that the text was sent from an email address. I know this is can be done but why would you text the sender back if you have no idea who they are.
I found two posts from the FTC(Federal trade Commission) sharing about this topic.
The funny thing
This scam usually targets college kids or 20 somethings looking to make extra money. My mom is in her 60’s and no way interested in having a sticker added to her car.
If your sent a similar text
If your sent a similar text just delete it. It’s a scam and I doubt you’ll be paid $500 a week. This scam was also common among job boards and classified job ads a few years ago. i’m not certain if they still are now.
I just thought I’d pass this info along.
