post updated 7/30/2022 to include some issues with the deodorant and the refillable base.

product update:

I thought I’d update this post and add some info about my user experience with the Dove Refillable deodorant.

Well now that summer is upon us I haven’t used it much at all. I also had a bit of an issue with the refillable design.

I don’t know if I knocked the container off my desk too many times or the rapid weather changes softened the deodorant but the product has come off the refillable base. I can try to squish it back on there but it would be a mess.

So with that being said, I don’t think I can finish using this refillable deodorant. Overall it worked okay but it wasn’t the best for me. I also found it stained my shirts depending on the material. I found out that this would have probably been a better winter deodorant as opposed to a summer one.

feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

A few weeks back I was able to try Dove’s new refillable deodorant. Like many brands these days Dove is trying to become more sustainable or eco-friendly.

I think the idea of a refillable deodorant is different. But it would cut down on waste in a way because you can just purchase the refill and cut down on packaging and such.

The deodorant is sold in a variety of scents and styles. I was sent the cucumber green tea scent. This si more of a gel-like solid deodorant. This product also claims to have 0% aluminum as well.

the product

I was sent the cucumber and green teat start kit. It includes everything you need in the box.

The box includes the refill deodorant, base, and lid which are both stainless steel. The base has a notch in it that you use to twist the refill into place.

The refill comes wrapped in plastic and a plastic cover.

Once you assemble the deodorant it’s ready to use.

ingredient list (source Dove produc page)

INGREDIENTS: Dipropylene Glycol, Water (Eau), Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Stearate, Poloxamine 1307, Fragrance (Parfum), Stearic Acid, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Simethicone, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Salicylate, Citronellol, Coumarin, Geraniol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool, Yellow 5 (CI 19140), Green 3 (CI 42053)

my user experience

The starter kit is easy to assemble. The lid fits well onto the base so it keeps the deodorant stick clean.

The deodorant scent is light and airy. As I mentioned this is more of a gel-like solid stick so it glides evenly and cleanly onto the skin. I didn’t feel it left any white marks on my skin.

As far as its effectiveness it’s about average for me. I’ve never had much luck when it comes to great wetness protection with 0% aluminum deodorants. I found reapplication may be needed depending on the weather and your activity level.

I did find that if you apply too much you may have spotting of your clothes. This may also depend on the material of the top as well.

The product itself is a good concept and a bit more sustainable than a traditional deodorant product. Yet it can make some changes.

As with any new deodorant product it may take a few days for your body to adjust to using it.

I didn’t have any adverse reactions or skin issues. I liked that the product scent was light and not overwhelming. I also liked that it didn’t leave any white marks on my skin.

In terms of effectiveness, I’ll give it an average rating. I liked the lightweight feel on the skin.

final thoughts

It’s nice that Dove is trying to be more sustainable or eco-friendly but I felt the product could be a bit better. It did help hold off odor but the wetness protection should be more noticeable. I’ve been using the product off and on for about a month or so.

The stainless steel base and cover are durable but if dropped you might knock the refill out of the base. But it may depend on how the product falls and the height at which it falls. I’ve knocked it off my desk a few times so I’m speaking from experience.

I liked the compact size you can store this in a drawer or carry it with you in a bag.

I’m not sure how long a refill will last with daily use. For now, I’ll finish the product off and see if my thoughts have changed by the end of use.

Overall the starter kit retails anywhere from $12 to $15 USD. Prices will vary by retailer. There are a few different scents as well.
