I recently was sent another Paypal scam email. Again these aren’t new but the one I was sent may cause worry for someone. So I thought I’d share about it.
the email
I was checking my email a few days back. I happened upon an interesting spam message. It was very generic and sent to me from Seipp, Lesley lesley.seipp@my.anokaramsey.edu.
The subject line stated Thank You For Your Payment Confirmation.
Of course this got my attention. Well when I opened the email I noticed it was a PayPal receipt. I also noticed that the email was sent to my old Yahoo email address. It’s still active but I have since updated my information. So yeah that was a red flag for me.
It stated that my PayPal account had been charged $698.99 by a company named Nano Tech Inc Ltd.
What i learned
I did a quick search for info on the school and the company.
As with any spam emails Seipp, Lesley lesley.seipp@my.anokaramsey.edu may be a real person. That’s a given.
The email was sent from Anoka-Ramsey Community College. Most community colleges offer an email address for students and staff. The college has two campuses as well as a Technology school. The college is based in Minnesota.
Like with any types of spam or scam emails many of this information is easy to access and free to obtain.
Now as for the Nano tech company is a bit different. Since there are so many technology companies I again did a Google search.
I found one Nano tech company based in Colorado. But I think my best bet was a company name that matched the business name.
Nano Tech Inc Ltd. from what I could tell was located in the UK. So that is a bit suspicious for a Minnesota or US-based community college to be working with a UK company. I also found that the price point was a bit out there with no info aside from the company name.
Another thing I noticed was the phone number listed towads the bottom of the email.
1(424)226-7813
I did a quick search and guess what I found. It’s on a few robocall lists. It’s Los Angles county based. So again this is quite a mix of locations and information.
Oh as an FYI PayPal always has a 1-800 number when it comes to transaction issues. PayPal is also based in North California so they wouldn’t provide a local number for transaction disputes.
what to do in a case like this
The first thing you need to do is to check the sender of the email. The email address is what I mean. Since this one wasn’t sent directly from PayPal I knew it was a scam.
Also always check your PayPal account directly to make sure you don’t have any suspicious charges to your account.
If you don’t you can always forward the email to PayPal’s spoofing email.
spoof@paypal
Always check your account first never reply back to the emails or click on any links. It’s better to contact the payment service directly.
