Okay I admit I like when people comment on my content. Who doesn’t right? It shows that someone sees what your doing and likes it. Well this may not always be the case. I think we’ve all come across the spammer who is asking for repeated follows or suggests the dreaded Follow for a Follow or F4F or which ever term they use.

I had some one post yesterday to an Instagram post : follow me please. I understand we are all trying to increase our engagement and follower count via social media. That is if that’s your biggest concern right now. Yet asking for followers doesn’t really do much I would think.

Social media comments in general

Most social media comments can be good because you have engagement. Even a simple thanks for sharing is helpful. But some people tend to post comments that may not be related to the content that is being shared. I share a few examples in the video below.

Self promotion comments vlog

I’ve had people ask if i need a logo. I’ve also had people just ask for a follow because they want to meet a certain follower count they set for themselves.

Now that one is sort of funny to me. I think if you need to ask for followers that’s sad. I can see if you ask among friends but to just spam random accounts that pop up in your feed or other’s who follow you can be a bit much. I also understand that many people hope that if they have a high follower count they may become the next big influencer or gain notice to a brand they hope to work with. Again I fully understand that but then again if you have 10 thousand followers and one comment on every 3 posts that’s a bit off don’t you think? But to each their own.

Follow for a follow

Okay I have never been much of a fan of this system. To be you have a bunch of people follow you then what? Viewing my YouTube analytic I’ve seen that out of the over 500 followers i have only 1 percent watch my content. Again I don’t find that surprising yet I still wonder what happens to those who subscribed. It also makes me think how many people get caught in this cycle.

There are even follow loops on various social platforms. You join one and have to follow all the people the other’s follow. I’m sorry but that sees like a chore to me.
But I go back to the question of:
What If the subject or content the person shares isn’t something that interests you?

Would you still follow this person just to get one more follower? I wouldn’t but I think i’ve been through this enough to know that this system may not be helpful for everyone. Also come social platforms have caught on to this practice too.

Here’s another way people ask for follow for a follow:

odd YouTube comment. Wanna be friends?
odd YouTube comment. Wanna be friends?

Some people ask to be friends. I had the wanna be friends? comment lately on a few videos. I’ve also had another one that also asked to be friends. Most of these may not be marked as spam by YouTube’s comment system. I just delete these.

However, some comments like these are worth looking into. I always check the pages most times i just delete them. If they are relentless like this page has been I block them. Since these comments were posted twice within seconds of each other i wonder if this is a bot or automated comment service.

Some comments are just random

I posted a short video via Instagram a few weeks back asking about random comments via YouTube.

I had these comments spread across a few videos and they were just very random. I wasn’t sure if they were self promotion or some type of tactic hoping to gain more followers. I flagged them as spam before deleting them.

Do I consider it engagement?

Sometimes I think there are those who figure comments will give them engagement or pique someone’s interest to learn more. Do I consider it engagement for my social content? Personally I don’t. If it’s just spam or a follow for a follow request or something similar I just delete it or mark it as spam. If the comments are repeated over a set period of days I block the account.

I would rather have no comments or engagement as opposed having spam content. But that’s my opinion.
