• The original motivation for punctuation—when almost all reading was done out loud by the few people who could do it—was to give speakers guidance about where to pause.
• In the U.S., periods and commas always go inside the quotation marks, even if they are not part of the quotation itself. In the U.K., punctuation that is not part of the quoted sentence goes outside of the quotation marks.
• The hashtag was first used in 2007 by Twitter users.
