I bought a Blue Ice snowball mic a few weeks back. So far I like it and it’s great. But the only con i found was the tripod stand.
You can check out the video below to see what I mean
Since I have limited desk space I found the tripod mount to be a bit annoying. For me and my desk, I spent to much time trying to get the mic to say put and not tip over. Since I use a laptop i have a cooling pad and it’s on a shelf so I have to move stuff around.
To try to avoid the mic from picking up the hum of the fan on the cooling pad I tried ot set it up on a box when filming. I don’t mind the mic showing up in videos but it’s a bit tricky trying to hide the box. I’ve also had the issue of knocking the box and mic off the desk during filming. That’s fun.
Other options
You have other options for a base if you don’t like the original tripod. You will, however, need to make sure the mount coupling will fit the mic. The Blue Ice Mic has a 3/8 inch coupling at its base. There are standard desktop stands and the moveable arms. I thought of picking up an arm but I don’t have a place to clamp it down and to be honest it would just be another thing for me to clean.
As I was reading I found that most of the info listed this style screw mount Stand with 3/8″ to 5/8″Â
I will say that if you would like an adjustable stand that may fit your needs as well. Some desktop stands may not be adjustable. Again you may have to read the specs to see what fits your needs.
After searching Amazon I settled on this desktop stand. It arrived earlier today and I’m very happy with it.
As you can see from the photo above the stand is a nice solid style. The base and the adjustable mount are metal. the nice wide base doesn’t seem like it will tilt.
As as you can see I picked up a mic screen too. This mic screen was suggested when I purchased the stand. I bought it more out of curiosity to see if it will help block out any excess noise my mic may pick up when recording.
The InnoGear products work well so far. I’ll have to try some test recording to see how it works out but set up was a breeze. I was able to get the mic onto the stand without any issue. The stand also has a standard mic holder for a handheld mic as well. The screen has a screw support clamp that you can adjust to fit the base of the stand you use.
