Since Halloween is on Thursday I thought I’d post a reminder about keeping pets safe.
Many candies are toxic to pets
Several foods are toxic to pets. But the ones that come to mind are the following:
- Chocolate
- nuts
- raisins
- sugar-free items (Xylitol)
- gum (sugar-free kind)
Chocolate
Chocolate can make a dog or cat gravely ill. Depending on the size of the pet and the amount ingested it can cause vomiting, diarrhea seizures, or even death.
The chocolate type may vary the symptoms. However, the caffeine in the chocolate will affect your pet as well.
This Pet MD info for cats is helpful as well as this FDA post for dogs.
Nuts
Nuts can cause vomiting and diarrhea in pets. The oils may also cause Pancreatitis.
Raisins
Gapes and Rasins are toxic to both cats and dogs. it can cause kidney failure if it’s severe. You can find out more by visiting this Pet MD page for cats and this post for dogs.
Sugar-free foods
Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs. It can cause a variety of issues or lead to death. You can read more about it at Pet MD. The FDA also has an article worth checking out.
The FDA and the ASPCA have a good list of toxic foods as well.
Other ways to keep your pets safe this Halloween
You can make sure your pets are microchipped if they go out trick or treating with you. You can also make sure they have some reflective items on their leash or collar. Or add a clip-on light or reflective tape to their costume if they wear one.
Make sure your dogs have updated tag info and please include a contact number. I see so many pets that are found with no contact number on the tags.
For cat owners make sure they are microchipped. If your cat is an indoor outdoor cat try to keep them in during all the activities. You can try to keep them in a room that’s a bit quieter for them.
Do you have any tips to keep your pets safe for Halloween share them in the comments.
