Let’s face it no one ever said having a pet would be low-cost. That being said I found that buying a Litter Genie would be more cost-effective than having to use a ton of small bags every time I cleaned out the litter box.
When we were a one-cat household with just Sophie it wasn’t that bag. But once we took the boys (Dylan, Sam, and Teddy) in things changed.
The one thing I liked about the Litter Genie is that it’s an all-in-one unit. So it helps cut down on trash and can hold up to 7 days’ worth of cat waste. This may vary by the number of cats.
I ended up buying 3 Litter Genie 2 Litter Genie plus and one Litter Genie XL.
litter genie refills vs store brand
In 2022 I thought I’d compare the authentic Litter Genie refills to store brands or even generics. I bought the Target up and up brand refills.
I found a few things that I noticed right off the bat. They are all basically the same design and shape.
Some of the containers may be a bit thicker on the sides but they are still a similar shape. They also have the same pull-tab plastic rim that the brand version has.
The only con i have is that the plastic tab to open the containers might snap off as you pull it up. I also noticed that for both the brand and store brand containers.
The bag style may vary
The thing about the Litter Genie bags is that they are multi-layered to help hold in odor and of course the used litter.
I noticed that the color is light blue. This was also true for both the name brand and store brand.
Both bags are pretty easy to pull out of the container.
The bags are a similar type. They are pretty sturdy but as with any plastic product might tear.

The store brand refills both fit into a litter genie.
Note
If you have a newer litter genie XL you may have an issue with some of the store brand or generic refills because of a design change they made to the refill holder.
How they compare in the end
Overall I can say I liked both the Litter Genie and Up and Up brand. They both did a good job and held up well when being cut and tied off.
I will say that I like being about to save a little money when I buy the store brand.
There might be some cons
The only issue I’ve noticed with the store brand or generic refills is that the quality may vary from purchase to purchase. I also noticed that some of the Up and Up bags might be a bit bulky like there is a little air trapped in between the layers. It’s not a deal breaker it’s just something I’ve noticed from time to time.
I’ve also noticed some generic brands might be a bit thinner or have fewer layers so they may not hold up as well. So far I’ve been lucky and haven’t had any tear on me. They just may not hold in the smell as much. Or you may need to replace them more often.
Other refill suggestions
I loved one brand from Amazon which is available at this time named Cat Wish. These bags were nice and durable. They also held up well.

Some bags may not have a plastic container or you may need to refill the container you already have. There are also adapters which basically is a refillable bag container.
Litter Genie also recently released a new Litter Genie that has easy-to-use bags.
