Since I’d heard that Parmaount Plus was with Showtime was going to launch an origial Dexter series I’ve been thinking about this quesiton.
I think Dexter was a popular show when it was on. I watched it a bit later but I loved it. I read all the books as well. I even bought the last book Dexter Is Dead just to see how our favorite charcter would end.
Who wouldn’t love a serial killer to only kills those who deserve it.
The books
Overall the books were well written and captured your imagination. It also let you form an image of the characters to a degree.
I will admit I read the books as I was watching the TV show so in my mind Dexter will alway look and sound like Michael C. Hall.
Darkly Dreaming Dexter is a great opener. It introduces you to Dexter his family and co-workers. We also get to learn about his Dark Passenger.
The book also talks about How Harry Morgan crated a code for Dexter. It helps deal with his urges as well as satify his Dark Passanger
The rest of the series lets us learn more about Dexter, his Dark Passanger and his relationships.
I will admit that the final book does tell us how Dexter meets his end. I felt it was fitting in a sense and allowed us as readers to come to terms with the loss of a beloved character.
The TV show
Overall Dexter did a good job at capturing the esence of the books. Granted some topic or characters were changed. Also some of the story lines varied as well. But the bones of the idea were still tied to the books.
The theme music and opening sequence was eye catching.
I think the TV show left many viewers felling a bit awkward at first . It was somewhat of a guilty pleasure. It’s hard to explaing but I don’t think many people felt right wathcing a show about a serial killer who only killed those who desered it.
It also seemed like an odd premise. But then again maybe not.
When the show ended I know many people had complaints about the ending. But I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a popular show ending where poeple didn’t find an issue with the ending.
The show also diverted from the books by adding some unexpected twists to the plot.
The show did make a come back for a limited run and it wasn’t all that bad but it did give us Dexter’s demise. So once again if you read Dexter is Dead you knew it was coming.
So why do we love Dexter Morgan?
I think Dexter allowed readers and viewers to lose themselves in the books or show. They also were able to observe what could be a taboo topic.
The idea of a serial killer who kills those who deserve it is unique.
Folowing Dexter’s jorney with his Dark Passanger and his life in general. This had some relatable themes as well.
